Today we’d like to introduce you to Harrison Amelang
Hi Harrison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since graduating with a degree in journalism in 2018, I have been looking for ways to combine my love of visual storytelling with the automotive world. I have more than a decade of experience as an automotive and motorsport freelance photographer and videographer; currently I’m a member of the Utah Motorsport Campus media team. While I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, I’ve always wanted to grow the business beyond freelance.
In today’s ever-connected world, establishing a brand’s online footprint is critical for success. I started Hamelang Media to chase my dream of telling client’s stories through photo, video and written material; showcasing the people behind the brand, their stories, and what makes them special. I help automotive businesses, racing teams, and drivers with their social media to share stories, market brands, and grow recognition.
I’m a recent transplant from Washington state, and starting a new business in a new city has been scary, exciting, and incredibly fulfilling. I’m very grateful to have been able to work with so many wonderful people, and I can’t wait to meet more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel a bit like a pinball in a pinball machine! I’ve been bounced around and have made plenty of mistakes, but have learned so much. Looking back to what brought me to where I am today, I can see dozens of important lessons that have prepared me for what I do now.
For example, I had a very special opportunity to write a feature story and shoot photographs for an article in the Porsche Panorama magazine. Despite having years of experience shooting, my first photo deliverables were sub-par. I was frustrated with myself for not executing at a high level, especially for something that was so important to me.
Luckily, my friend and designer of the magazine, Richard Baron, helped me with a re-shoot and taught me what I can do to elevate my work from ‘good’ to ‘great’. At first, I was embarrassed that we even needed a re-shoot in the first place, but my second batch was excellent. Thinking back to that experience still makes me a little embarrassed, but I use it as a critical example to fuel my work ethic. I take pride in what I do and proudly hand over deliverables to clients with my name attached.
Learning how to learn, how to listen, and how to keep going even when I’ve fallen short are just a few of the lessons I’ve learned a long the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create social media content and manage social media channels for automotive and motorsport clients. I’m also a freelance photographer and videographer specialized in motorsport and action.
I’m most proud of my name appearing in the masthead of Porsche Panorama magazine. I help design a portion of the publication, and it’s a really special feeling seeing my name in there every month!
What sets me apart from others is my work ethic and business ethos. At my core, I love telling people’s stories. Motorsport and the automotive world is packed with incredible people, fascinating stories, and unique experiences. The fact that I get to seek those folks out and share their brands with my own media is a dream come true.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the mountain backdrops of Salt Lake City and the thunderstorms! I’m from the Pacific Northwest and they don’t get nature’s firework shows like we do here.
Things I like the least – the lack of ocean and fresh seafood!
