Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Pay.
Hi Johanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started Elements of Sage six years ago. I had the inspiration to blend sage with herbs & flowers for added aromatherapy and healing benefits in a sage-burning ritual. It was my goal to create the most beautiful blends of sage bundles. The sage burning practice/ritual is very personal and making my own sage bundles with the added blossoms, herbs & crystals, took the experience to another level. I found myself connecting with the energies of the natural plants, and at times I felt like I was downloading little messages from the herbs and flowers, I felt the need to spread their joyful messages by making these beautiful sage bundles accessible to the world/people around me. I felt inspired to pass along their energetic healing benefits so that others can experience the magic. Burning Elements of Sage bundles creates a unique and elevated sage burning experience.
Once I created some unique blends of sage bundles, I started an Instagram business account and started sharing beautiful images of the gorgeous plants and sage. Just by sharing my work, it started to catch on. Little by little my sage bundles started to get out into the world via social media. I made the sage bundles in my home and with each year, Elements of Sage gained new traction and was growing/doubling in growth.
Today, I operate out of a small office and storage unit in Salt Lake City, Utah. I offer wholesale sage bundles on a makers/vendor platform and currently supply sage bundles to boutiques and wellness gift shops across the USA & Europe.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. There was no road map for a business like this. I made so many mistakes along the way and still do! But thankfully I learn from each of these mistakes.
I learned about business concepts from relatable products and applied those techniques to my business. Over time, I was able to develop my own systems and formulas to help me become successful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a mother, athlete & creative mind. I knew that once I had my own children, I needed to find a way to be able to generate income and still be a full-time mom. For me, the solution was to create my own business. This allowed me to create my own schedule and income. It was also a true test of being diligent and committed to making this successful. Many long hours, working whenever I could between cooking meals, cleaning my home, and getting my kids to school. Let’s just put it this way, I am an expert “Multi-Tasker” lol! There is no other way to get it all done.
I am extremely proud of what Elements of Sage has become. It was literally made from a simple idea and now it has blossomed into such a wonderful product with clients all over the world. It warms my heart just to think about that.
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes, my advice is to write down lists!! Write down your to-do list.
It’s the simplest concept, but if you don’t write down your to-dos, and don’t cross them off as you get them done, it simply won’t get done. So write down your list and get each task done one at a time. So simple, but it works!
