Daily Inspiration: Meet John Berry

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Berry.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my artistic career as a freelance illustrator. For over a decade. I worked for major publications and advertising campaigns across the country and throughout the world. As I began to tire of the deadlines and the constant back and forth with clients, I decided it was time to walk away from illustration and begin painting for myself. This led me down the path of being a gallery artist. Initially , painting landscapes and wildlife, but eventually transitioning into strictly non objective work. I have been painting this subject matter for the better part of a decade.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A life in the arts is never a smooth road. Once I had become established in the illustration world and then decided it was not for me.I had to basically start from scratch. Without illustration work and the income it provided, I found myself trying to figure out the gallery world and how to find success and representation in this new market. Once I had figured that out and then realized that representational work was not what I wanted to continue to do I had to walk away from several galleries that represented me and many collectors that collected my wor. I began anew with the non objective type of work.I felt a desire to create. At each point along the road I felt that I was starting over.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to create pieces that have an emotional content. I do this through texture and through vibrant colors. My work has been collected by several museums throughout the country. I like to think I specialize in telling a story of the human condition. Even though each piece I create is my own story and is unique to me .I believe they all have underlying currents that anyone who is human will resonate with. I also have come to see that what sets me apart from others is telling my own personal story and creating pieces that please me. This in and of itself makes my work unique.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Over thirty plus years of painting , I have come to understand that what matters most is being true to yourself. Which I interpret as being who you are and what you are and not letting others dictate what type of work you should create.
