Daily Inspiration: Meet Katy Gish

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Gish.

Hi Katy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My dad was a photographer and I grew up watching him fall in love with his art. It wasn’t until he passed when I was 14 that I appreciated his photos. I decided to take a beginner film photography course in my first year of high school and quickly realized the thrill of telling a story through photos. My first year was spent doing film and eventually my first digital photography course the next semester. I owe much of my talent to my teacher Ms. Riley. She took me under her wing and told me I had a good eye it just needed to be trained a little more. She taught me to love photography like my dad once did. Eventually, she got me into art shows, the more advanced class my junior year, and recommended me for yearbook photographer my senior year. Being a yearbook photographer was an amazing experience and brought me so much joy. It made me realize I wanted to do this forever.

After graduating, I kept up with photography by taking photos on vacations and weekends. Southern Utah is my favorite location by far. I got clients slowly by advertising and taking senior and family photos for friends. Word of mouth is amazing but worked out better when I started my website last year. I am always looking for an opportunity to expand my skills and can’t wait to see where life takes me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road that’s for sure. Being a woman in the LGBT+ community has always had its challenges and I often get judged before I even have a chance to prove myself. I have definitely lost a couple of jobs because of it, but will never hide who I am. Not having my dad with me to show me his love for photography was very hard, but luckily I had teachers and family that encouraged me the whole way. I owe a lot of it to my mom, step-dad, and aunt. They always pushed me and my aunt always taught me the beauty of the world. Unfortunately, I lost my aunt to cancer in 2018, which made me stop photography altogether for a little over a year. I couldn’t see the beauty in the world when the one who guided me to it was gone. I finally came to realize that she taught me everything I needed to know, and I needed to move on and continue for her. Her words of wisdom will always be with me wherever I go.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a freelance photographer based in Salt Lake County but I am willing to travel for work. I take bookings on my Facebook page, or by messaging me. I mainly take family, couples, engagements, fashion, and event photos, but I am up for anything!

Along with that, I have entered numerous photography competitions. I received two High Commended awards and two Expert Merits this month so far. My main focus has always been Nature and Landscapes. You can buy any of my art through my website.

Photography has always been a hobby and a side job but in recent years it has been more of a priority in my life. The calm of the art is healing and making people laugh to get their true reaction is an amazing feeling. The joy on others’ faces when they realize how beautiful they are warms my heart. My next goal is to capture the other side of art; the not-so-pretty side. The protests, the fight, the unfortunate. I will be going to Ghana this summer to learn abroad and hope to bring light to struggles in the villages.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Use your connections! Friends and family are a good way to reach people. It is a good start for your business, but make sure to give back. If you help them, others will be more willing to help you.
