Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kaylynn Mower.
Hi Kaylynn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story starts almost 29 years ago when I was adopted at the age of eight from a little town called Velikiye Luki, Russia. My amazing parents have changed my life for the better after living in an orphanage.
At the age of ten I have always wanted to write a children’s book about my adoption experience. I have always heard about parents’ experiences, thoughts, and feelings that they went through, but never did I hear from the actual child who gets adopted on how they felt or what they experienced through their own adoption. Finally I illustrated and published my first children’s book, “When My World Changed.”
I really just wanted to write and publish my book for my parents to show my appreciation for how they have changed my life in so many ways. But, I knew in my heart that I needed to share this with the world and for the children that are getting adopted now or in the future. It’s hard to be vulnerable and honest about my background that I grew up in while I was in the orphanage. But if I can help children or parents then it’s worth it to me. Having two children of my own, they are asking lots of questions about my adoption and trying to understand why children have to get adopted. Makes me appreciate what I have and what I can do to help families with adoptions today.
From each book that is sold, a portion of the earnings are going towards families that are awaiting adoption. My big goal is to start a non-profit or charitable organization to help elevate families financial burden and adopt their special someone a bit quicker.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If anyone has written a book or has published one, it’s definitely a process. I have learned so much from marketing, guidelines to publishing a book, social media, having a brand, and having my book on Amazon – it’s been a struggle in itself.
My biggest challenge has been to step out of my shell and actually talk about my adoption. However, since I have published my book last year I have met some amazing families along the way that are awaiting adoption. Hearing their personal stories I know that I can make a difference on them and to children by sharing my own perspective and experiences that I went through as a child. It brings me happiness and an overwhelming feeling at the same time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now I’m trying to build my website, start a podcast, grow my brand and share my story to others so then eventually I will reach my goal and start a non-profit or charitable organization.
What sets me apart from the rest of the world? I don’t think I’m special by any means but I know that I have a spunky Russian personality (as many of my family and friends have mentioned to me). I am honest and confident, Im a friend, a sister, a wife, a mother and someone that loves everyone around her no matter what their circumstances they come from. I want to make a difference in the world whatever that may be in my future moving forward.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
By sharing my story through my website, by reaching out to me, asking me any questions that you might have. I would eventually want to start a podcast. Talk more in-depth about my journey before and after being in the orphanage and how its affected me. I would love to collaborate or interview anyone who has been adopted and wants to talk about where they are now and if their adoption has changed them.
I would eventually love to present at elementary schools by reading my book during library time or story time. Maybe move my way to adoption agencies, or foster agencies to reach my story to the younger generation.
