Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Black.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved traveling and taking photos. When I was little, you would never see me on a trip with my parents without my little point-and-shoot camera.
A few years ago, on a road trip through Utah, I convinced my now husband Dave to invest in a camera with me and we started learning how to take photos together and I learned how to edit those photos properly. I then started posting my photos on Instagram. The edits were awful at first but over the years with a lot of tweaks, they have improved. A couple of years into our photography journey, I decided I wanted to write about my travels as well and that is when my blog www.oceanusadventure.com
Dave and I moved from Australia to Canada in 2021, to explore more of the outdoors and now I write hiking guides, and road trip guides. I also discovered that I could make money off content creation on Instagram which we now both do as a side hustle.
Over the past year, we have had the most insane adventures that we could have possibly imagined, backpacking in grizzly country, hiking up mountains for sunrise and sunset, and camping next to glacial lakes.
We can’t wait to see where the next year takes us!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am working towards making my side hustle Oceanus Adventure, a full-time job but it is hard to build a business while working full-time.
The burnout is real and when pitching to brands to create content for, I get a lot more no’s than yes’s. I have learnt that the best way to grow as a creator and a business owner is to stay consistent, don’t go overboard with trying to get too much done in one go and remember why you started doing this in the first place – because it is your passion.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My husband Dave and I work as a team to create content (photos and videos) for brands and tourism boards in the most beautiful outdoor adventure settings. You might recognize us for our colorful bronze orange and yellow puffer jackets which we wear in ALOT of our photos and videos.
We are proud of our work and are continuously trying to improve our quality.
On top of the content creation, I have a blog where I write hiking guides, road trip guides, and gear guides from my point of view with factual tips for the reader to use.
