Today we’d like to introduce you to Khadijah Wade.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began in 2015 after moving from North Carolina to Utah. When I struggled to find hair extensions for a job interview, I realized there was a significant gap in the local market. Despite friends and family doubting the business would succeed due to a lack of diversity in the area, my determination to fill that need and prove them wrong fueled me to open my own beauty supply store for the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. Building Safari Beauty was far from a smooth road, and I had to overcome several significant obstacles to get where I am today Meaning I had to push past doubts from friends and family who didn’t believe the local market could support my vision. I worked a full-time job for three years while simultaneously building the business, which required immense sacrifice and countless sleepless nights.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Safari Beauty, I provide a curated selection of essential beauty products, with a specific focus on high-quality hair extensions. I specialize in meeting the beauty needs of a diverse community in an area where these products were previously difficult to find.
I am known for being the go-to destination for those who were previously underserved in the Utah market. People recognize Safari Beauty as a space that was built out of necessity and a deep commitment to the community.
What I am most proud of is building this business from the ground up on my own terms. Overcoming skepticism and turning personal frustration into a thriving, reliable resource for my customers is my greatest achievement.
What truly sets me apart is my 20+ years of experience as a professional braider. Because of this, I don’t just sell products; I provide expertise. When a customer walks into my store, they can ask any question about hair, and I have the answer. This combination of hands-on professional knowledge and a business built on community care is what differentiates me from any other store.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is the time I spent in Senegal with my grandmother. She was a successful businesswoman who taught me the fundamentals of commerce and leadership from a young age. Being by her side, watching how she navigated the world of business, was my greatest inspiration. Those early lessons in resilience, strategy, and service shaped the businesswoman I am today and laid the foundation for the grit and vision I bring to Safari Beauty.
