Daily Inspiration: Meet Lisa Roundy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Roundy.

Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up working with my family on our cattle ranch in Manila Utah. I loved being outside and was always very interested in the aspect of growing and nurturing the land. Whether it be with the animals or the hay. This leaked over to growing gardens and learning how to grow flowers in this harsh climate. I worked with and observed my mother and adopted her attitude that flowers are worth the time and effort to grow. Even out here.

Now as an adult I have had the opportunity to move back to the same family ranch I grew up on, and was anxious to find a way to share flowers with the community and surrounding communities because not many have the chance to enjoy them. I am passionate about the outdoors and the beauty that can be found there. I believe it can have such a positive impact on people.

So I found a place protected from the weather and started a project to build greenhouses.
I connected with a friend in town. Stephanie rose. we stared talking flowers and I learned that she was also passionate about the same things. So i asked her if she would like to help me and she has been a huge benefit and support for the business. She was willing to parter with me and has given the business the ability to grow through her extra set of hands.

Now we work together as the double R flower co ( roundy and rose)
We serve the community with flower subscriptions where we deliver flowers to their homes once a week, every other week, or once a month. We sell to local florists and work with brides to provide them with the best quality flowers.

Both Stephanie and I have young families and we include our children in the work. And they are learning the importance of hard work and nurturing the land like I learned as a child.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

We sell thousands of flowers in many varieties. Through trial and error we are learning what grows best in the greenhouse’s and what grows best in the outdoor environment. We are learning how to enrich the soil with our specific soil needs, and how to overwinter the flower beds.
We do all of our gardens organically. And believe that to be the best option for us.

Growing here at the ranch is an extremely challenging task. Between strong winds , pests, long cold winters, limited water, alkaline soils and huge daytime and nighttime temperature swings in the summer it is a full time job to monitor the plants needs. We are very happy with the success we have achieved and strive to learn more and not let our climate hold us back. We want to encourage any in this same situation and help them to grow flowers wherever they are.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost I have always been proud of being a mother.
I have been lucky enough to be a stay at home mom with my five children. And have enjoyed bringing them along with me in this business.

I have also loved the life of a cowgirl and have been passionate about cattle and horses and western living. I have always been creative and driven, and not afraid of hard work.

I have a love of art and have done many oil paintings and graphite drawings. I have used my knowledge of colors, textures and painting to create floral pieces. To me flowers are like real life paint.

My knowledge of agriculture has been vital to my success. An understanding of how to work the land has been very beneficial to me.
I have been able to apply my work ethic, and I am driven to persevere where others would probably quit.

All of these skills, whether blessed with or acquired, have been needed and used as a grower of flowers; from arrangement of colors to work ethic I m grateful for my experiences to this point.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A couple of things that make me happy are being outdoors with my family. Watching the plants grow and do well, and seeing the final product. It makes me happy to share the flowers with florists who really appreciate them and use them to create their own beautiful creations. It makes me happy to share the flowers with people from the community and watch them put a smile on their faces
