Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been fascinated with drawing for a very long time, but I started to take art seriously in high school. I remember trying to finish a new drawing every day, and most of my teachers did not mind that I would draw throughout the class.
Although I have had some detours, art has always been an important part of my life. I spent a year or two trying to study art at Weber State University, but I was a little too focused on getting high and skipping class. In January of 2019, I checked myself into a drug rehabilitation facility.
It took some time to get my life back in order, but this was the best decision that I have ever made. I now like to spend my time painting, drawing, playing music, hiking, and weight lifting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yeah, it definitely has not been a smooth road, but I am grateful for that. There were many years that I was lost and in deep spiritual pain. I mentioned my past struggles with drug addiction, and the only way out of this was by facing pain and discomfort.
God is good and has delivered me from all kinds of evil, and my life is completely different because of his grace. The only way through my struggles was with faith, courage, honesty (especially with myself), and daily discipline.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create detailed drawings and paintings, often with unique characters and faces. Although drawing is my primary focus, I too am in love with oil paint. It is so fun to work with a medium that stays malleable for so long.
It is like playing with taffy. For most of my work, I like to incorporate hidden faces and features. Because the work is often abstract, people tend to see things in the layers that I did not intend to draw/paint.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
God + Music.
