Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Jackson
Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Being born in Utah and raised in Oregon, I have a spirit of adventure and exploration in my bones. I came home from my 2 year LDS Mission to Florida with an idea that I wanted to go to college, play lacrosse in college and go into a healthcare field.
Fast forward 4 years and I’m finishing up a Bachelor’s of Science with an Exercise Science major from Utah Valley University. I spent my time there busy as a TA in the Anatomy Cadaver Lab, presenting research and playing one season of collegiate lacrosse. I graduated with the plan to go to Physical Therapy school and ended up switching to Chiropractic school.
Spent the next 3.5 years in Dallas Texas at Parker University learning the “Science, Philosophy and Art” of Chiropractic. I used my time on campus being active in clubs and student government spending a year as Student Body President. I did a residency in Jackson Mississippi at the VA Hospital providing Chiropractic services.
Spent a year in the Bay Area of California working in a private clinic before moving to Salt Lake City to do the same.
In 2018 I opened up my own practice and spent the next 4 years building it up to be a center of health and wellness. I believe the best way to become known in a community is to serve that community. I enjoy using my practice to bring people together and creating fellowship.
After a landlord sold the plaza for it to be developed, it was time to find a new home which leads me to Murray Chiropractic and Car Accident. I am so impressed with the leadership in this clinic, they are focused on providing quality chiropractic care to all that need it.
In my personal life, I have a wonderful wife and after going through infertility treatments including IVF, we were able to have a successful transfer and our son is now 2.5 years old. We share our story because infertility is lonely and isolating, we need people to talk to about these issues.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road..if I had to sum it up into one word, that word would be “Reset”. The worst thing about playing Nintendo with your friends was when someone would accidentally jostle the gaming system and it would cause the game to completely reset! Now we had to start over and go through the motions again, while also re-experiencing them for the first time.
My first major reset came in the form of an unexpected divorce. I was 2/3’s of the way done with Chiropractic school and was beginning to plan out the next steps. Opening a clinic and putting down long term roots just a few towns over with my ex-wife was the plan. Or so I thought. A few weeks into 2015 my now ex-wife announced she was done with our relationship and was leaving, unless I was prepared to abandon my religious convictions. Then she would stay in the marriage. That didn’t work for me and now I had to push “RESET” and enter back into the world of planning, dating and socializing.
My second major reset came in the form of having to walk away from a group of friends and colleagues that I thought were my family and move out of state to Utah. I had moved to the Bay Area with long terms hopes and dreams, but it turned out to be a facade. Instead I had to push “RESET” with regards to my professional life and create a new path in that world.
My third major reset came from the Pandemic. I had been running my own Chiropractic office for 4 years and I was forced to close it due to a landlord wanting to flip the property. Time to push “RESET” again and figure out what my professional life was going to look like.
Let me tell you that while these obstacles had painful moments and lonely times, as I type this out now in October of 2024, I just celebrated my 6th Wedding anniversary to the most beautiful, incredible and intelligent person I’ve ever met. I hit the jackpot of life when she agreed to become my companion. With the professional changes I had to endure, it pushed me and allowed me to grow my skills, to the point that I am the Lead Doc in the “Murray Chiropractic and Car Accident Clinic”.
My advice to anyone going through obstacles or going through a “RESET”, Win The Day. Former coach at the University of Oregon, Chip Kelly, brought that mantra to the program. He wants his players to be the best they can be and how does that happen? By putting in the work each and every day. You can’t control a lot of factors, but you can make sure that you Win The Day in your life with proper planning and emotional strength.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I get to work as a Chiropractor in a traditional office setting. We see all sorts of conditions and problems, our most common being Low Back pain, Neck pain and people that have been in a Car Accident.
We have a rigorous intake process for new patients and we do this because we don’t want to be some Chiropractor that you see once and bounce. Maybe you were scared off by the adjustment or the financial aspects were weird…whatever it might be, we strive to make sure that each patient that comes into our office is SEEN and HEARD as individuals. We come up with a customized plan to help patients accomplish their goals and achieve lasting relief.
I will say, if you’re in Utah and you are involved in a Motor Vehicle Accident, there is NO reason for you to not get seen by a healthcare provider. With the PIP coverage built into every* insurance plan, you have some discretionary funds to be seen by someone and make sure everything is healthy.
Before you ask…
NO! Your insurance doesn’t ding you for using this coverage. And regardless if you’re the at fault driver or not, you have access to these funds and get seen.
I strongly encourage all that in an accident, be seen if not by a Chiropractor, then at least by someone in the health field.
How do you think about luck?
I think we make our own luck in life. When we are operating at our highest level and are in tune with those around us, life seems to just go our way. It’s not easy and I think that’s why people don’t experience “luck” every day. It takes a lot of work to be in an authentic place with ourselves and with the world around us. It requires humility and vulnerability to accept what we might need to work on.
