Daily Inspiration: Meet Max Brugia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Brugia.

Hi Max, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are an Italian integrated architecture and interior design firm. Beside Salt Lake City and Park City, our Head offices are in Rome and Milan. Obicua, the company name, comes from Latin and means “being in the many places at the same time”. The capability of doing projects for all different locations in the World and maintaining the character of the Italian artisan craftsman boutique is in fact one of the main features of our firm. I am one of the design principals and founding partners of the studio, together with Valerio Campi and Lucia Catenacci.
At Obicua, we see contemporary architecture as a way to improve people’s quality of life. That vision has led us to focus on designing homes and workspaces that reflect the way people truly live and connect.
Over the years, we’ve been involved in projects in Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa — always engaging with different cultures and trying to create architecture that belongs to its place, to what we like to call “the Spirit of Place”.
I spent some of my early professional years in New York City, working in a large international firm where I learned to deal with large scale designs. After years of travel and projects around the world, I became one of the partners leading our projects for the United States — with a particular focus on high-end residences in Utah and California. As per my personal attitude this is what I love to do: I can take care of my clients and their families from the moment they decide to build their new home to the day they will step in, helping them to achieve their aspirations and build their own intimate space, the way they like.
In the past years this is what we have been doing: designing custom and bespoke homes – We say “tailor made” homes, for wealthy clients who love Utah and the Mountains.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s certainly been a long and winding road. We’ve designed projects in developing countries, where time and a deep understanding of place were essential. Then, we found ourselves working on restorations and protected historic buildings in Italy’s most artful cities.
For instance, I would have never imagined, at any point in my career, being entrusted with the conservative restoration of such a grand and significant cathedral as St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, with all its centuries-old marbles. It was such a responsibility!
Many times, we’ve designed homes in extraordinary and remote places, for truly remarkable people. The greatest struggle has always been learning how to listen — to really understand our clients, helping them turn their dreams into reality, while guiding them to strip away everything that’s not essential.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are specialized in designing homes and workspaces in extraordinary locations where something unique is required. I m personally very proud of the fact that there is no home similar to another one that we designed. This to me is a proof that we genuinely produce personal designs made for individuals to respond to specific conditions of the location and of the client.
