Miriam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was 16 I bought a hand-carved Scandinavian bed made by my neighbor’s pioneer ancestor, thus began my love of objects with history. Later I managed a local family-owned antique shop which taught me about higher-end collectibles and the people who search for them.
I had a chance to buy a vintage shop and partner with my sister and create Abode Vintage which is now in its 24th year.
We source unique items and vintage clothing and love seeing customer’s delight in the thrill of the hunt.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have navigated choppy waters such as moving 5 times (which is no small feat for a small business with big inventory), I work full-time so finding dedicated people with a love for and knowledge about vintage is essential, small business cycles are unpredictable and of course the Covid shut-down was stressful for everyone. Currently we have ban in our location 2 months and it’s like starting over!

Our catch phrase is fun, funky & functional. We seek the unusual and enjoy curation. Vintage is definitely an art not a science so we’re always learning about new styles and trends (cores).
Vintage clothing is a particular niche that we do well, both men’s and women’s with a bit of children’s sprinkled in. Finding things that are timeless and in good condition is a challenge and we especially love pre-1979 fashion!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
True vintage, slow fashion and customer delight are the life blood of our business. Giving new life and avoiding the landfill is a particular passion as we love our planet and strive to leave it in better shape for the future and honestly the quality of vintage is incomparable!
