Daily Inspiration: Meet Natalie Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Wilson.

Hi Natalie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I learned the importance of exercise and staying active at a young age. Growing up, my dad would drop me off to school on his way to the gym. He used exercise to help him through some major health issues and taught me by example the importance of staying active and being consistent. In high school, I attended my first group fitness class. During that class, I remember thinking, “Yep, this is what I’m meant to do.” Because of that strong impression I was determined to get the proper education to pursue this dream career of mine and to help benefit me in my own fitness journey. I attended Utah Valley University and got a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. I graduated in 2012, but had to put my career on hold. I met the man of my dreams, got married and soon after we had our first child. Shortly after our first child was born in 2013, I decided to push the gas pedal and start looking for teaching opportunities at my local gyms. This was not an easy task. It took a lot of hard work, more education, lots of subbing classes, and teaching for free at my local church, before I finally got my own class at a gym. I got my first class in 2014. Since then I’ve continued to educate myself and certify in different formats including Kickboxing, Barre, Cardio Fuse, and Surge Fit. I’m currently teaching my dream schedule at the gyms I always wanted to teach at. It took years of education, consistency, hard work to get to where I am today. Along with my in-person classes, I also have workouts on fitness apps and on my fitness Instagram page @natwilsonfitness

If ever I get asked about my own personal fitness journey, I always say that “Exercise saved my life.” This is because exercise helped me through and continues to help me through some difficult mental health issues. It also is helping me manage my autoimmune disease. Exercise is my therapy. I do it to not just make me feel strong and confident, but it helps me be the best version of myself. I’m a better mom, wife, and friend when I’m consistently exercising and staying active. I also exercise for my future self. I want my older years to be full of adventure and longevity and I know that is only possible if I do what is necessary NOW so my body is capable of doing what I want it to do later in life.

As a fitness professional, I strive to have a positive and uplifting approach to fitness. I want to help others learn the physical and mental health benefits of exercise. You don’t need to be extreme and be at the gym 2 hours a day to get the full benefits of exercise. All you need to do is move your body. It can be as simple as going for a walk, going on a hike, or just a quick 10-minute workout at home.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. There have been many ups and downs. The fitness industry, especially the group fitness scene here in Utah, is very competitive. But, I truly believe that when you stay consistent and work hard, it will pay off. It might take a year or longer to get to where you want to be, but sitting around won’t help you move forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create effective and fun workouts you can do at home or at the gym that is suitable for any fitness level. I also promote the importance exercise has on our overall health and longevity.

I’d say the thing I’m most proud of so far in my career is the number of people I’ve been able to reach. I get messages on Instagram from people all around the world thanking me for helping them start exercising again.

As far as what sets me apart from others in the fitness industry, I’d say is the approach I have to fitness. A lot of fitness professionals put a lot of focus on the physical appearance aspect of exercise and what it can do to help you achieve a certain look. Which, I have nothing against whatsoever, but, my focus is to help others see that you don’t need to have a six-pack to be fit and healthy. I strive to help others learn the benefits exercise has on our bodies on the inside. How it can help prevent disease, help improve your sleep, helps manage stress, anxiety, and depression, etc.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel my ability to connect and empathize with others has helped me in my success, along with hard work, patience, and consistency.
