Daily Inspiration: Meet Nate Baldwin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Baldwin.

Hi Nate, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started playing music with a group before my 8th birthday. By the time I was 12 the world of music marketing fascinated me. I spent the following 25 years loving every aspect of being part of the music community; touring, running a venue, recording, etc. In the midst of it all I spent the whole time trying to “crack the code” on how to successfully market music on a DIY budget. FanBase.fm is a culmination of all that time and a doctorate in the musical school of hard knocks.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle as a musician is keeping the casual fans engaged. Most people are only casual listeners and maybe have one or two artists they’re a huge fan of. Musicians spend immeasurable resources to try and get in front of the right set of ears, but from there turning “that’s a cool song” into “I would like to trade my money for a concert ticket or a t-shirt” is a crazy uphill battle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My musical career has now spanned nearly 30 years. I have done work in studios in Nashville, LA, and Salt Lake. I’ve toured the U.S. with band I’ve been lucky enough to be a member of. I’ve had a solo project and been a hired gun in backing bands as well. I’ve produced recordings spanning genres from hardcore to hip-hop. I ran a music venue in the middle of it all as well. in 2012 I started Baldwin Guitars, a boutique guitar brand, Our guitars can be found in the hands of some of the most promising up and coming emo and pop punk artists. During the last decade with Baldwin Guitars while working with artists the idea for FanBase.fm began to percolate.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
In the music industry, there’s no shortcuts, there’s no secret sauce. Hard work is the key factor; that comes in the form of networking, rehearsing, touring, content creation, recording, pounding the pavement to get people to shows, etc. Good music is just the first step of a massive journey.
