Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Phillips.
Hi Rob, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
RoHa Brewing Project was founded in 2017 in the heart of the Ballpark area in Salt Lake City. A partnership based on the love of craft beer, and the desire to offer the community a place to convene, and grow friendships. We have grown our taproom, and distribution, and the grown a following of friends, we call family. We offer local drinks, cocktails, spirits, ciders, wine, and of course a large array of beers available onsite. Open daily.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course it has not been a smooth ride – but is any journey perfectly smooth? We have encountered bumps in the road, like Covid, which prevented us from doing the very thing we were established to do – bring people together! We pivoted, offered more beer to go, and we persevered. We have since pivoted again, and grown our indoor and outdoor space to invite more friends into the brewery to enjoy live music and local libation.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I was an Engineer in Salt Lake for many years before I jumped into the Brewery world. I simply fell in love with the strong ties in the Craft Beer Business. Owners, working together to lift each other up, brewers teaming up to make better beer or share their knowledge and experience. A community acting more like friends than competitors.
At RoHa Brewing, we are lucky, we have the flexibility to make a huge variety of beers, from malty red ales, to dark porters, to hazy IPAs. We really get to flex our brewing muscles in the Taproom, and share some unique and amazing beers. Or Taproom offers a unique setting for the community to convene, and enjoy a drink, and possibly some live music, or an event. We are open 7-days a week, and offer cold beer to go as well.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risks are simply part of the game. A well thought out plan can only cover so much – eventually you have to put that plan to work, and see what is out there that you did not think of! In this business there are small risks, like offering a new style beer. If it doesn’t go, at least we gave it a shot. There are also larger risks, like launching a new beer to the market, or discontinuing a beer for that matter. We have launched many beers – some more successful that others, and we simply try to learn from that risk, and grow in the future.
Pricing:
- Utah has one of the highest alcohol tax rates in the nation, which has be be absorbed in our pricing.
- The cost of materials for packaged products is much higher than the beer itself!
- Retailers and Distributors take a large portion of the margin available on products sold in retail locations
