Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Hansen.
Hi Adam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I studied painting and art history at the U of U, graduating in ’05. While I was working on my own painting career, and, alas, needing a real job, I got hired by Susan Meyer to run her new Salt Lake gallery. In a case of terrible timing, that gallery opened in December of 2008 – just a couple months after the financial crash. It was quite sad really. The downtown gallery was a beautiful space, but it didn’t last more than a few months. So I was out. Years later, in 2012, Susan had a long-time employee retire and she reached out to see if I wanted the gig in Park City. I happily accepted and spent many years in the role of Gallery Director. Fast forward to spring of 2024 – Susan decided it was time to step away from the business and passed the torch, as it were, to me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think it has been quite seamless overall, though I remain surprised by how steep the learning curve is. I had a well-established rapport with our artists and clients and I know the transitions and cycles of business in a heavily seasonal town so my experience has served me well there. The thing I’ve realized is that, as the business owner, I can’t quite compartmentalize my life the way I used to. There really are no days off – there’s always something you could be working on, an artist you could be reaching out to, a show schedule you could be refining, social media posts you could be making, on and on. Learning how to balance all of that and keep the operations side of things running smoothly has been a big challenge – but an enjoyable one.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Meyer Gallery was started by Darrell and Gerri Meyer in 1965 – making it the oldest gallery in Park City! Located in a historic landmark building that was built to house the First National bank, we’ve worked hard over the years to maintain the historic feel, with the original brick walls and bank vaults still visible. Darrell and Gerri’s daughter, Susan, took the reins in 1997, before passing the baton to me in ’24. Today, we remain committed to the Meyer Gallery’s mission to promote the best in contemporary painting and sculpture.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We’re open seven days a week, please stop by and say hello! It is well-worth the visit for any art lover – particularly those interested in the Utah art scene. A special focus of our gallery has always been promoting local talent and we’re so fortunate to live in a state with so many great artists! Park City Gallery Stroll is the last Friday of every month and that’s when we tend to hold our artist receptions and special events, so that’s always a great time to visit.
