Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Mulia.
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Kelli and I opened Ebb & Flow in January 2025 using a combination of our savings, maxed out credit cards, and a dream. We believed in creating something that didn’t exist yet in Salt Lake City. I never had the chance to dance growing up and now as an older mom I haven’t been able to find a truly beginner-friendly space for adults with zero experience that isn’t geared toward kids. Kelli is a professional dancer with over 20 years of experience who had to retire due to injury. While she still dances and loves movement, she wanted a space where dancers could move freely without the pressure that often comes with professional or competitive environments.
Together, we have created a chill, low-pressure studio exclusively for adults to explore dance and movement at any level. It turns out we weren’t the only ones looking for a space like this and that’s been a big part of how we’ve grown so much in just one year. We now offer multiple dance styles like ballet, hip hop, jazz, heels, modern, and tap, as well as movement classes like yoga, Pilates, and stretch. The most amazing part of opening the studio has been the community we’ve built. Our members support us in fostering a welcoming and safe environment. We look forward to continuing to learn from our community and expand the studio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening Ebb & Flow was very scary! It wasn’t the smoothest road to start because Kelli and I don’t have any business background and had never done anything like this before, so we were learning everything as we went. We had to figure out everything from building a website, to studio construction, and building a community from scratch. The first few months were especially tough because we truly didn’t know if the studio was going to make it. But over time, we started seeingn consistent growth which was incredibly validating. It showed us that what we created was something people genuinely wanted and needed. The community we have built has made all the hard work worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ebb & Flow?
Ebb & Flow is a movement studio. We offer adults-only dance classes including ballet, hip hop, jazz, heels, contemporary, and tap, as well as movement classes like yoga and Pilates. What sets us apart is the low-pressure, non-intimidating environment we’ve created. There’s no expectation to be perfect or perform. Our space is here for you to move your body, connect with others, and connect with yourself.
We’ve become known for being a space where adults feel comfortable trying dance for the first time, as well as a place where experienced dancers can come move freely without the stress of a competitive or professional atmosphere. Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the community we’ve built. It’s supportive, encouraging, and inclusive. We have become more than just a studio and our space feels like a second home for a lot of our members.
We want readers to know that our studio is a place to show up exactly as you are. Whether you’re brand new to movement or are coming back after a long break, our goal is to help you feel confident, strong, and connected through dance and movement.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Staying organized is huge for me because not only am I busy co-owning and running Ebb & Flow, I also serve on a couple of boards for the county, I’m a music teacher, there are a number of creative projects I’m currently working on, and I’m a mom. My online calendar is basically my lifeline and I use the app Notion to keep everything organized in one place. Having systems that help me stay organized and clear-headed makes a huge difference in being able to show up fully for work and life.
