Exploring Life & Business with Annie Davis of Davis Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Davis.

Annie Davis

Hi Annie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always knew a typical 9-5 salaried job wasn’t for me, but I never envisioned myself in the web development field. I happened to come across an opportunity for a part time, work from home project manager position back around 2015 and I jumped in without a second thought. That was my first introduction to the world of website development and marketing and I couldn’t get enough. I stayed with that company until I worked my way up to being the CEO, and then left to start my own firm in 2018. I’m so fortunate to love what I do, and it’s hard to imagine doing anything else at this point!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yes and no. When I founded Davis Designs, I was already very well connected in the community so we were able to start with a sufficient client base from day one. In that aspect, client acquisition and sales have been relatively smooth. However, finding the balance of running a business while bringing two kids into the world was extremely difficult at times. I brought my laptop with me to the hospital when I went into labor with my son, simply because we were still a small team and there just wasn’t anyone to cover me while I was gone. When I had my daughter a few years later, it was somewhat easier because we had enough recurring revenue from monthly retainer clients that I was able to ease off the new projects for a bit, but I still had essentially zero maternity leave. Looking back, I would tell my younger self to invest in hiring additional team members ahead of time and just take the time off!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Davis Designs?
We offer website development and marketing services for businesses throughout Utah. We don’t have a one size fits all mentality, so we’re able to create completely custom solutions for our clients based on exactly what they need, which I’d say is fairly unique in this marketplace. We also believe in saying no – meaning if we aren’t the best fit for a project, we’ll say no and refer them to one of our competitors (who we view more as team members). This has allowed us to really focus on our core offerings and what we excel at. I’d say our reputation and how many referrals we receive from our clients are both aspects that I’m extremely proud of. It means the world when we get a call from someone who was sent to us by a past client!

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Growing up in Reno, our house was on the very edge of a subdivision that was just being built. That meant our back fence opened up to miles of (what was at the time) untouched hills of sagebrush, scorpions, snakes and dirt trails. Starting at about age 6, I used to spend hours every day exploring those hills and catching bugs with my best friends in the neighborhood. I even had a “pet” scorpion for a while named Lily, who we’d all go out and catch crickets for. Those days spent outside exploring with my little group of friends until the street lights came on are by far my favorite childhood memories.
