Exploring Life & Business with Cody Sims of FADED FORGE BARBERSHOP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Sims.

Hi Cody, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from North Georgia I moved to Utah in 2017 I started a home restoration and tile business worked for myself for a few years. Until eventually deciding to go to school and get my barber license. Before then cutting hair was just something I did for myself or a family members. After graduating Paul Mitchell I found a barbershop in Layton close to my house and worked at that barbershop for a little over two years and when one morning after getting to work there was an eviction notice on the door and myself and the other barbers realize that we were about to be out of a job. After discussing our options the other barbers and myself didn’t want to have to move to a different shop and rebuild a clientele and essentially start over. So my wife had the idea and told me that her and I should sign a new lease and open up our own barbershop. And after speaking with the other Barbz 💈 they said that they would stay and stick it out if we did so. So we signed a new lease in the same location renovated and and were able to keep our clientele. Some call it luck but I look at it as preparation meeting opportunity.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a rollercoaster with normal ups and downs… if everything went smoothly and easy I would have more fear in the business failing because nothing worth having is ever easy or smooth. Everything is a learning experience and even though I had worked for myself and owned a small business before this was a whole new experience. Transitioning from a coworker to Owner and boss has probably been the biggest learning experience. And I’ve loved every stressful moment and every lesson learned and will continue to do so. As a Barber and shop owner you have to always remain teachable listen twice as much as you speak and practice what you preach

We’ve been impressed with FADED FORGE BARBERSHOP , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I wanted our business name to have the a monogram logo… 2 word business name where the first letters are the same. Leaving the door to branding wide open for hats or shirts to have a logo… a symbol to represent the business. The name was created out two other names that I just didn’t really like. Faded obviously used in many shop names but Forge was my favorite it has two definitions in wich both explain what I think is most important in having a successful barbershop… 1 you can forge new relationships with clientele and local community by giving back.
2 forge means creating something out of nothing or turning something old into something new, both definitions are what I try to incorporate into the business everyday.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Normal kid grew up in a small town with two loving parents who gave me and my siblings the best life that they could and gave us opportunities that they were never given. I owe them everything I have today. I played baseball I rode motorcycles hunting fishing camping all the great things that the 90s kid could have. I was a social kid in school I didn’t have a certain crowd that I hung out with . I like making people smile and still do today.
