Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby Bauer.
Hi Colby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The idea for Thread Wallets came after Colby lost his wallet to the ocean and discovered when looking to buy a new wallet that the category was stuck in the 80s, filled with bulky and boring. What started as a side hustle selling at farmers markets in Hawaii, quickly grew into a nationally recognized brand, sold in major retailers, online, and through our own stores. At the heart of Thread was always a bigger purpose: helping people feel connected.
As Thread grew, we wanted to extend that mission beyond products and into impact. after dealing with some mental health issues, Colby found a passion in helping you prepare for life challenges. That’s when we started Carry On, our nonprofit dedicated to helping youth build resilience and mental health skills through action sports (primarily skateboarding). Carry On became the arm of our work that focused directly on giving back, equipping kids and families with the tools to navigate whatever life throws at them.
Now, we’re expanding that vision through Carry On Studios. This is the creative engine that brings everything together—developing media, stories, and experiences that inspire kids to discover their passions, overcome fear, and carry on through whatever life throws their way. From magazines to animation to immersive experiences, Carry On Studios is our next chapter: blending creativity, purpose, and storytelling to reach and uplift the next generation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business and marriage at the same time is no easy task. McKenzie and I had to figure out a lot and very quickly are both our marriage and our business could fail.
Just like any business that has been running over the last decade. We are no stranger to the rollercoaster of politics, recession, tariff, wars, technology advances, and many other things.
Some of the most difficult battles that we have faced have been in our own minds. Mental health is for everyone.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
