Exploring Life & Business with Dallin Spriggs of Zion Electric & Solar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dallin Spriggs.

Hi Dallin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Solar journey started in 2018 going door to door in southern California. Making so much sense in California I was excited to bring it back to Utah and help homeowners become more self-sufficient. I got a job as a solar installer in St. George and really enjoyed the installation process and how the panels look on the roof.

Eventually, I was ready to do my own thing and start apprenticing to get my electrical license. After searching for an electrician, the planets aligned and everything fell perfectly in place. I met Travis Stull (our master electrician) at Chuckwalla rock climbing. From there Zion got licensed first part of 2020 as a General contractor and master electrician.

We pride ourselves in designing the perfect system based on your electrical needs. We specialize in Off-Grid, Hybrid Battery Backup systems. We know a proper install starts from designing and selecting the right equipment to guarantee to exceed your expectations.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We got licensed in January 2020. For most people, the world had been flipped upside down and everyone had new challenges… like where to find toilet paper.

Starting a business that usually used door-to-door salesman to find interested homeowners created a unique challenge because at that time everyone was scared to even crack their door to talk. We have switched to almost all online marketing and even bids or proposals have switched to emails or zoom calls.

During this crazy time, we knew we had to set ourselves to a higher standard and take care of our customers. Lucky for us everyone in St. George talks to each other. We knew we would be relying on our professional clean installs and excellent customer service to get referrals to stay busy.

There are so many sales companies out there trying to make a quick buck it’s easy to see the difference with Zion. We don’t outsource any part of the installation and I want to offer homeowners the opportunity to learn about solar and see what the possibilities are with no obligations.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Zion Electric and Solar is owned and operated out of Southern Utah. We specialize in; residential Grid-Tied, Hybrid, Off-grid, Battery, and Generator systems. We install it on every kind of roof no matter the material or steepness. We currently have 2 install crews operating in Utah.

A proper system starts with the design. Solar technology has to be one of the fastest growing industries and making sure you use the right equipment for the job is very important. There are a lot of excellent panel manufacturers, We always use premium panels with the best warranties. Some of the manufacturers we use are Silfab Solar (exclusively manufactured in the USA), REC, SEnergy, and Enphase.

Another big decision is what kind of inverter to use. As I stated before there are different types of solar systems.

– Grid-tied inverter (Solar system shuts down when the grid goes down). No battery backup and can be micro inverters.

– Hybrid inverter (Includes battery backup and when the grid goes down, the inverter switches to critical loads and allows your system to keep producing without sending power back to the grid.) Micro inverters are available with battery backup to make it a hybrid system but they are not as effective as they convert the DC sun power to AC usable house power at panel level than when it gets to battery converted back to DC then when needed from house converted back to AC.

Most Hybrid inverters have a generator hook up and for most customers that want to run their Central Air-conditioning, we recommended adding a generator instead of more batteries and inverters. It is possible to run Air-Conditioning off just Solar and Batteries.

– Off-Grid. Hybrid inverters that have a battery but are not hooked up to the grid. Can also hook up Generators.

For inverters, we like to use a company out in Latin Utah called Lion Energy. They have smaller lithium-ion batteries and solar generators they sell out of Costco. They make a Hybrid inverter with a whole home battery back that is stackable from 13.5 kWh to 40.5 kWh per 8 kW inverter.

For our Hybrid systems that are not quite ready to purchase a battery, we recommend Solar Edge. They are one of the largest inverters manufacturers in the world and have partnered up with LG to make their batteries.

We also Us Enphase Energy and their Daylight system. A system that will allow the panels to produce if it’s sunny weather the gird is down or not.

We offer Solar panel cleaning packages as well as service existing solar systems.

We also offer free solar analysis. If you are interested in what solar could do for you and how much it can save you.

All we need is a picture of your most recent power bill and we can use our online program to get you a really good estimate of what is possible, How much it will cost and how much it can save you.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Please do your research before going with any Solar Salesman. There are a lot of people out there just doing the sales and outsourcing the installation.

This will lead to an installation that doesn’t exceed your expectations and can be problematic if you need to get someone to service your system or make any changes down the road.

  • 8 kW Grid Tied system Average cost $22,000-$24,000
  • 8 kW Hybrid with 13.5 kWh battery backup system Average cost $33,000- $36,000
