

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant Barth
Hi Grant, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My global brand journey has taken me around the world, through the halls of corporate America, and ultimately to entrepreneurship and education. I have led product creation and brand merchandising organizations and teams at Nike and Levi’s. Those roles took me around the globe, as I lived and worked for a decade in Asia. Japan continues to be my area of expertise.
As the CEO of brand lab ThenWhat, cofounder of insights company Heart Data, cofounder of consumer brands Mad About Land and Penna Healthwear, and adjunct professor at the University of Utah, I have been able to marry my skills and experience with my passion for learning and my love of all things brand.
Personally, I’m constantly curious and enjoy a range of passions, from agriculture and the outdoors to product and brand design. Utah has been a perfect mix of family, winter sports, and community service.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been faced with challenges and struggles. The key to overcoming obstacles is maintaining a positive outlook and staying focused on problem-solving. Keeping talented people around you at all times – a team you can truly lean on – is vital to success. I’m a big believer that diverse, hard-working, and intelligent teams can change the world if the world for the better. I never go it alone.

ThenWhat is an advisory and brand lab that works with premium retail clients to craft and amplify their brand identity through the consumer’s lens while incubating new brands based on historical knowledge. As a collective of strategists and thought partners with deep experience working with the world’s leading global brands, we take a commercial approach to problem-solving instead of an intellectual one. We aim to build strong, memorable, authentic brands that resonate with consumers and stand out as category leaders.
I’m very proud of our client work and the trust we have built through our brand initiatives. We work best as an extension of our clients’ teams as they internally protect and grow their core business. We help them expand for more new customers through the lens of cultural relevance. We work with good people who want to make an impact.
My work with the University of Utah’s Eccles School of Business is a laboratory for teaching and testing new methodologies in brand development.
What matters most to you?
Family and friendships, including my chosen family, matter most to me. It’s critical to stay humble and grounded at all times. Those around me help maintain reality and balance in life. I’m grateful for my mentors’ honesty and direction in business and life.
