Exploring Life & Business with Havoc Hendricks of Hav House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Havoc Hendricks.

Havoc Hendricks

Hi Havoc, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small town in Idaho where art was not taught or celebrated. I always felt like I was a “creative” person but that the only practical application would be in a business environment (which was not something I was looking forward to).

In grad school, I was so bored with my classwork that I started painting as a hobby to help pass the time. Because I had a LOT of time to paint I started to get better & friends/neighbors also started noticing my work & wanting to purchase it. That was the first time I thought of the possibility of pursuing an art career.

For the next 5 years, I would come home from a simple day job & practice my art until my work became polished enough for strangers across the country to start reaching out & acquiring my work. Today, I’m an international artist & have had the pleasure of making art for private & public companies, real estate developments, hotels, surf/snowboard industries, private galleries, etc.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I didn’t go to art school so the hardest “hurdle” for me to navigate was the idea that I was doing something wrong (i.e. taboo in the art world that art students would be taught about).

I proceeded with great caution because I felt there were mysterious “rules” of which I knew nothing about. Over time, however, I slowly realized that there are almost no rules in the art world & that realization launched me into a fast track of progress.

We’ve been impressed with Hav House, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m inspired by minimalism, both aesthetically & as a way of life.

My art represents the complex patterns found throughout nature- delivered through a minimalist perspective. I call this combination: DETAILED MINIMALISM.

My art style is meant to capture the infinitely complex patterns one sees in water, mountain strata, moon topography, rock striations, etc. These details reveal themselves when seen up close, but from a distance, my work fades into the simple minimalism of only a couple of colors/ shapes.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I hate networking because I’m an introvert but what helps me immensely is to use social media to promote my work (I have a little more confidence behind a screen than I do in person).

One of my biggest “mentors” is my wife, Laura Hendricks, who is also a full-time artist. Together, we can give constant, honest feedback which, I believe, has helped us get out of our heads & make sure that our work is constantly evolving in a positive direction.
