Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Fisher.
Hi Jared, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We started in 1992 as a college marketing project at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. We started by taking small groups and then corporate groups out to Red Rock Canyon national conservation area on bike tours that morph into hiking tours and then that expanded over the next decade into multi day tours, mostly in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico. That expanded the next decade to numerous other destinations, including Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and even some international trips. We mostly focus on mountain bike tours, but we do a lot of other tours and multisport tours as well. We’ve been in business for approximately 34 years now.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it is definitely not been a smooth road. It’s very difficult to obtain and keep federal permits. You’ve got to keep up on operating tours on these lands once you obtain permission. Some of them have limits on the number of outfitters from one to 10. Over the years we’ve had to navigate operating tours in the backcountry through natural disasters and COVID-19. It’s definitely not super easy to run a bike to our company and knowing what I know now I probably wouldn’t start one over. I would just buy one that’s already in existence!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a multi faucet in business operating in numerous locations around the United States. Everything from mountain bike tours to multisport tours to road bike tours. Also, we operate international destinations by design. We’re definitely known as a specialty in mountain bike touring. We also run three retail bicycle stores two in Las Vegas and one in ESCALANTE, Utah. We’re definitely known to customize any vacation for families, groups or individuals to make a memorable experience.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes, I don’t suggest starting up a multi state touring operation where you are the outfitter. My suggestion is to purchase a company already in existence. Most of the best permits have been gobbled up by companies like ours and a few others and it’s very difficult to do this or repeat this model. That said, there are tour operations out there available to purchase or there are other ways you can get into this type of adventure business you can just focus on one location and specialize in that location, keeping the business model, smaller and more manageable.
