Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Jewkes.
Hi Jess, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started working in the spa industry in 2007 and quickly fell in love with the atmosphere. In 2009 I moved to Salt Lake City and began working at a holistic spa. Wanting to further my career in the spa industry, I decided to start esthetics school, graduating in 2012. I had no idea how much I’d enjoy this job! It’s been a beautiful 11 years, connecting with so many different people. I never intended to start my own business but after we left Salt Lake, I started to get so much anxiety. I realized that doing esthetics helped me calm down and I missed the connections with others. So, I started working out of a salon and the rest is history!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s definitely not been smooth! Every business has it struggles and I am still building my business, I have big plans. But, first and foremost, I am a mother. My children are young and that limits the time I can pour into doing esthetics. I would rather be the one to raise my children than paying someone else to, no shame if that’s what you need to do though! It’s taken me years to get my books full and some months are better than others but, I never give up!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hydrate skincare studio?
I started Hydrate skincare studio in 2020. Not having a space to rent, I started out of my mom’s home office. After a short 3 months, I found the perfect space to rent at Legends Salon, in St George, UT. Moving several times in a short period can be hard on an esthetician and sometimes clients don’t follow but I am so very lucky that all mine did. The 60 minutes I share with my clients is so special to me. They share their lives with me and my walls keep all their secrets. I’m so honored that they feel comfortable enough with me to be vulnerable.
I mostly do facials/microneedling and I specialize in buccal and facial massage. Buccal massage is an inner oral massage, I put my fingers in your mouth, and I am able to reach muscles/angles I wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. This technique helps relieve tension from TMJ, drain your sinuses, helps with headaches, and helps to lift and tone your face. It’s truly my favorite service to give!
My clients refer their friends and family to me often. When I am discussing their concerns or what goals they’d like to reach, they often reply with, “I’ve been told you pay great attention to deal and take such good care of your clients.”. And, I do take a lot of pride in the work I provide.
It’s rewarding to watch my clients gain confidence once they start to see improvement in their skin. I offer micro needling, chemical peels, lash lifts & brow laminations, full body waxing, and I am a face reality acne expert.
Whatever you skin goals are, I am your gal to reach them! xo
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
YES! You cannot tell someone that their fears aren’t real. Whatever side you sat on; your fears are valid. People just want to be heard and understood. I saw so many business take a drastic approach to their policy, and it turned so many people away. I left that decision up to my clients. It was their time! I’d ask them if they’d feel more comfortable with me wearing a mask or not wearing a mask. I wouldn’t bring up my thoughts on the topic but instead, I just listened to them and validated their fears. Thats what this world is missing… listen to what people are saying and don’t interject with your own thoughts.
