Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Arnett.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I didn’t set out to start a garden design business—it grew (pun intended!) from my own love of creating beautiful, productive spaces. What began as sketching layouts for my own kitchen garden turned into neighbors and friends asking, “Can you help me with mine?”
Pretty soon, I realized there was a real need for gardens that were both functional and elevated—spaces that felt curated, not cluttered. That’s when Bare Root Garden Designs was born.
Today, I get to blend design, practicality, and a touch of luxury to help families grow food, gather outside, and enjoy gardens that feel like an extension of their home!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! That first year in business was rough. I wasn’t on social media at all before starting Bare Root Garden Designs, so suddenly having to show up as a content creator felt intimidating and way outside my comfort zone. On top of that, the tech side of running a business was overwhelming—I just wanted to be out designing gardens, not buried in websites and software. Thankfully, I had an incredible support team. My dad quite literally held my hand while we set up my website and worked through the tech side of things together. Having that support made all the difference in getting through those early challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bare root garden designs?
Bare Root Garden Designs creates gardens that are as stylish as they are productive. I specialize in raised bed vegetable gardens and edible landscaping, offering both DIY and turn-key installations that allow families to grow fresh food right outside their back door without sacrificing beauty or design.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just install garden boxes—I design curated outdoor spaces that feel elevated, intentional, and seamlessly integrated into a client’s home and lifestyle. From raised beds and trellises to seasonal planting plans and even edible landscapes woven into the yard, my goal is to make gardening both practical and stunning.
I’m most proud of building a brand that challenges the stereotype of gardening as rustic or messy. My clients know they’re getting spaces that are polished and modern, yet still bursting with herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Whether through a consultation, a detailed planting plan, or a complete turn-key installation (with a custom garden send-off basket), Bare Root Garden Designs is about creating more than a garden—it’s about cultivating a lifestyle.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to not be afraid to show up as your authentic self. When I first started, I thought I had to look or sound a certain way to be “professional,” but the truth is, people connect most with the real you.
Especially on social media—show up as yourself. Share your personality, your quirks, even the behind-the-scenes moments. That way, when people meet you in real life, they already feel like they know you. You’re not showing up as someone completely different—they’re meeting the same person they’ve been following and rooting for.
The right clients will be drawn to you—and that’s where the magic happens.
