Exploring Life & Business with Kenzie Kessler of Kenzie Kessler Photo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Kessler.

Hi Kenzie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Eight years ago, I was about to get married and wanted to give my soon-to-be husband a boudoir book. I was a broke college student working as a nanny and didn’t have the funds to spend on something so fancy. So, I grabbed my camera, set it up on a tripod, and took my own boudoir photos. Soon after, several of my friends wanted me to take their photos and of course, I took them.

Seeing the response from my friends was like a drug. The way they lit up and started to compliment themselves was all I needed to be hooked on boudoir. So, one day I decided to start a Facebook page, and overnight I had messages asking how to book. I was floored, got right to work, and haven’t looked back. I have truly found what makes my heart soar.

Fast forward to today, I’ve been in business for almost 9 years and have photographed hundreds of incredible clients. My hope is to keep building a community of like-minded women and to continue serving our community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh boy, being a small business owner is never a smooth road but so far, it’s been worth it. I had to learn EVERYTHING on my own. Bookkeeping, scheduling, editing techniques, pricing, style, etc. It’s a lot to manage as one person. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by a tribe of people who see what I’m doing with my work and they have supported me every step of the way. After breakdowns and wins, I have learned so much and can’t wait for what’s next.

We’ve been impressed with Kenzie Kessler Photo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a professional boudoir empowerment photographer helping women on their self-love journey. Over the last few years, I’ve become known for my outdoor boudoir photoshoots. I take women to incredible locations around Utah like the Bonneville Salt Flats and Moab for photoshoots. These women come from all over the country and for most, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I love to step outside the box and try things that scare most photographers. If you have a crazy idea for a photo shoot that will make you feel empowered and strong, I’m your girl. Creating art with my client’s vision never gets old. As a brand, I’m proud to say that I have created a space for women to feel safe, confident, and brave.

Boudoir photography is often misunderstood. It’s more about the internal connection and self-esteem boosts my clients get from seeing the photos. I capture them in ways that they have never seen before. Every day, these women have inner dialogs that don’t match who I see. Being that little stepping stone to kinder self-talk is amazing to experience.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Thankfully, my business wasn’t terribly affected by covid-19. Communicating with my clients was crucial to ensure that we both stayed safe.
