Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lexie Woodard.
Hi Lexie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
When I was 11, a shiny new video camera fell into my hands, igniting a passion that would shape my future. I dove headfirst into the world of YouTube, crafting everything from quirky vlogs to elaborate music videos. My friend and I would spend hours planning short films, dreaming of watching our creations on the big screen of my home theater, edited with old Windows software.
As the years flew by, the world was blindsided by Covid, and like many, I found myself at a crossroads. Fresh from an internship in Europe and unsure of my career path, I turned to a cheap camera from Amazon to document my travels. When a dear friend announced her upcoming wedding, I eagerly offered to film it. With my modest equipment, I captured the magic of that day, and I was hooked. The joy it brought me sparked a new idea—I could turn this passion into a business.
Thus began a journey filled with new faces, diverse cultures, and the privilege of witnessing countless beautiful milestones. While the early days were slow and marked by free shoots to hone my skills, momentum eventually emerged. Yet, success brought a double-edged sword—I constantly compared my work to others, leading me away from photography entirely.
During this hiatus, I found myself longing for the art form that had once brought me so much joy. A new job opportunity that involved some photography reignited my passion, but this time, I knew things had to change. If I were to return to my business, it had to be on my terms—100% authentic and driven by pure enjoyment rather than comparison. I promised to be a creator, not just a consumer in the industry.
So, here I am with a fresh business name and a renewed sense of purpose. Ready to embark on this journey once more, with a commitment to authenticity and to find joy in every moment.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been anything but smooth sailing. I’ve encountered and conquered numerous challenges in my business and personal life. In an industry brimming with incredible creators, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of feeling inadequate. Yet, I’ve realized that there’s no such thing as “good enough”—only different artistic and creative visions.
Embracing this mindset has been transformative. I’ve learned to celebrate diverse styles and sometimes acknowledge when others are on a different skill level. It’s about accepting that there’s always more to learn and endless room for improvement.
We’ve been impressed with Tapestry Films, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Tapestry Films specializes in capturing the authenticity of life’s most cherished moments. Primarily focused on elopements and intimate weddings, I document various events, from births to corporate gatherings. Offering both photography and videography, we aim to preserve your memories with a natural, unobtrusive approach.
My philosophy is centered on creating an experience that feels genuine and relaxed. Recognizing that many people feel uneasy in front of the camera, I strive to make the process comfortable and enjoyable. Whether directing or blending into the background, I aim to capture your true self without any awkwardness.
I treat each event as unique and irreplaceable, opting for a documentary-style approach over staged productions. My focus is on capturing the moment as it unfolds without artificial embellishments. We also emphasize the importance of being present in the moment, encouraging you to pause and feel the day’s emotions.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Something that helped me when getting started was reaching out to other creators who inspired me. I was surprised by how many people were willing to answer my questions and offer advice.
And though at times I didn’t feel talented enough, I still showed up by messaging other professionals, attending content days, asking for people to model for me, and just doing everything I knew would benefit me. Eventually, things will pick up, but it doesn’t feel like that in the beginning.
