Exploring Life & Business with Liz Sackewitz of Kaleidoscope Dance Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Sackewitz.

Hi Liz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I founded Kaleidoscope Dance Studio in the fall of 2001, beginning with 60 students in my small basement studio. After leaving my position as a high school dance teacher and drill coach at American Fork High School, I sought to create a studio that would allow me to continue my love for dance education while maintaining a flexible schedule for my growing family.
In 2015, the studio relocated to our current facility at 10600 South and 1300 East, expanding to three classrooms. Today, Kaleidoscope proudly serves approximately 300 students and is celebrating our 25th anniversary season.
As a non-competition studio, we are committed to providing strong technical training within a positive, encouraging environment.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of our most meaningful accomplishments was navigating and ultimately emerging from the pandemic. I am deeply grateful to the families who remained committed to Kaleidoscope during such an uncertain time.
We adapted quickly—providing virtual instruction through video classes and later returning to the studio with carefully taped squares on the floor to ensure safety and distancing. While many studios were forced to close their doors, the loyalty and support of our students and families allowed us not only to endure, but to continue growing. I will always be thankful for the trust and dedication of our Kaleidoscope community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kaleidoscope Dance Studio?
I am incredibly proud of the studio we have built. I entered this field as an artist and educator, not as a business owner. With no formal background in business or accounting, I faced a significant learning curve in the early years. What I initially envisioned as a five-year endeavor quickly grew into a lifelong passion. With the steady support of my husband, Bill, we learned and navigated the business side together, building a strong and sustainable foundation.
Kaleidoscope Dance Studio has earned a reputation as a trusted, high-quality dance education program. Our mission is to develop technically strong dancers while nurturing a genuine love of dance that will stay with our students throughout their lives—regardless of the paths they ultimately choose. As a non-competition studio, we continually strive to cultivate a positive, drama-free environment where each student is known, valued, and supported.
We proudly offer instruction in Jazz, Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Tap, Hip Hop, and Tumbling.

How do you define success?
If I’m being honest, it always comes back to the joy. I simply love watching happy dancers, and recital season—though incredibly time-intensive to prepare—is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. There is nothing quite like seeing our spirited, confident students on stage, celebrated and cheered on by their families.
I vividly remember standing backstage during one recital, feeling the weight of all the logistics and last-minute details, when one of my four-year-old students looked up at me and said, “Isn’t this so much fun?” In that moment, everything shifted. It was a simple but powerful reminder of why I love this work and why I am so grateful for the studio we’ve built—a place where joy, growth, and celebration take center stage.
