Today we’d like to introduce you to Madalyn Houghton.
Hi Madalyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After a pivotal turning point in my career, I realized that I wanted more than just a job—I wanted to create something that was entirely my own. The experience left me with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep understanding of the value of independence and more importantly, integrity. I decided to take a leap of faith, stepping away from the “traditional” work environment and embracing the challenge of building my own company. With a passion for my craft as a barber and a desire to shape my own future, I took the leap and was/am determined to build a business that reflected my values and aspirations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been as smooth of a road as it can be! Opening your own business entails a lot of hard work and a lot of figuring things out as you go. Getting all of the proper licensing and documentation to open felt overwhelming, but looking back a year later I feel that every obstacle I’ve been thrown I have figured out and that makes me proud.
Another challenge when you have your own business, especially as a barber, is that you are everything all at once! I am my own receptionist, stylist, manager, advertiser, janitor, etc.!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have been barbering for a little over 6 years! I specialize in men’s grooming and work hard to make sure every client leaves feeling like a million bucks. When you walk into my shop it is my mission to make sure you feel heard and comfortable. I have a lot of skin fade clients and love to do those! But all hair and beard trims are so fun for me!
Something that sets me apart from other shops is that when you are here, you are THE client. There is no one else here to distract from making sure you get a service that is tailored to you and the focus is on you the whole time! I also keep my pricing competitive as I want my clients to be able to come in as often as possible. When you come to my shop you won’t be disappointed! Go look at my Google reviews!
How do you think about happiness?
My family and husband make me the happiest. I couldn’t have built this business up without their help, and there was a lot of it!
But another thing that makes me happy when it comes to work is making people feel good about themselves. I have experienced numerous times when a client has come in not having the best day and by the time they leave you can just visibly see the confidence boost. Seeing my clients smile and look at themselves after their service truly makes me so happy!
