Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Anderson.
Hi Matthew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story has two pretty different chapters. For a lot of my life I was a web designer and developer. I owned Oikos Designs and built websites and did hosting for clients all over the world. I enjoyed the creative part, but if you sat down with me for coffee, I didn’t really want to talk about work. Something was missing.
So one day I grabbed a piece of paper, drew a line down the middle, and listed what I was truly passionate about on one side and what I was skilled at on the other. Hunting and the outdoors, mentoring new hunters, and helping people find and follow Jesus were at the top of the passion side. The skills were design, building websites that actually make money, and running a business. Where those two lists came together, the idea for Spika USA was born.
I wanted to help the guy who watched a couple episodes of MeatEater, got fired up about harvesting his own meat, but didn’t have anyone to show him how. I wanted to give him good gear at a fair price and some real skills so he wouldn’t quit after a couple seasons.
We started small, became the first U.S. retailer for Spika out of Australia, and later stepped out in faith to become the full U.S. distributor. Then came one of the hardest years of my life — five serious hospitalizations and three near-death experiences. The shortest hospital stay was still five days. Those months shook me deeply, but they also refined the vision and made me even more determined to live the second half of my life for things that really matter.
In 2022 our house burned down. We were displaced for over a year and rebuilding was a financial battle. But God kept opening doors. Today we provide almost everything a hunter needs in the field — except the gun and the meat. Sales have doubled every year. We’re still completely bootstrapped, and we’re shipping to all fifty states and Canada.
More than anything, we love getting people outside, mentoring them, and pointing them toward Jesus. We partner with The Life Outdoorz and use the business to support nonprofits that do the same.
It’s been a wild ride, but I’ve never felt more alive.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, not even close. It’s been one of the hardest roads I’ve ever walked.
Before the business even started, I went through that brutal year with all the hospitalizations and near-death experiences. That shook me. Once we launched Spika USA, bootstrapping everything brought its own pressure — trying to grow while still making time to actually be in the woods with people. Then came the house fire in 2022. We lost our home, were displaced for over a year, and rebuilding cost way more than our insurance covered. On top of that, new tariffs on imports from Australia have made things even more complicated with pricing and supply.
There have been plenty of long days and uncertain nights. But through all of it, I kept coming back to one thing: this isn’t really my business. It’s God’s. He’s provided every step — the good and the hard ones. Believing that gave me the peace and the strength to keep going. The struggles haven’t stopped the mission; they’ve actually clarified it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Spika USA. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We’re Spika USA — the exclusive U.S. distributor for Spika, a great Australian hunting and outdoor brand. We carry technical hunting apparel and layering systems, backpacks, gun bags, shooting supplies, accessories — basically everything a hunter needs in the field except your firearm and the meat.
We focus on solid, dependable gear at prices that regular working guys can actually afford. We’re not trying to be the fanciest or most expensive brand. Our sweet spot is the new hunter — the guy who’s inspired to get into it but doesn’t have a dad or uncle to teach him. We want to meet him early, give him good gear, and help him build real skills so he sticks with it.
What sets us apart is that “white-collar products at blue-collar prices” approach. We care about the whole journey — not just selling stuff, but getting people outside and mentoring them. We partner with The Life Outdoorz, and any profit we make goes toward supporting ministries that connect people with Christ through the outdoors and help with conservation.
If you’re new to hunting or just looking for gear that works without breaking the bank, come see us. We’d love to help you get started the right way. Spika USA is becoming known as a brand that genuinely cares about the hunter’s whole journey — not just selling gear, but helping people develop real skills and confidence in the outdoors. We spend as much time as possible mentoring in the field, and we’ve partnered with The Life Outdoorz, a nonprofit whose mission is to introduce people to Christ through hunting and outdoor experiences.
What I want readers to know is this: our gear is excellent, but the bigger purpose is what drives us. We exist to help people experience the outdoors successfully, build meaningful skills, and ultimately open the door to a relationship with their Creator. Any profit we generate goes toward supporting nonprofits that focus on wildlife conservation, habitat preservation, and connecting people with God through the natural world.
If you’re new to hunting or looking for reliable gear that doesn’t break the bank, we’d love to help you get started the right way.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My relationship with Jesus and helping other people find and grow in their relationship with Him. That’s at the center of everything for me.
Those near-death experiences a few years ago really reset my priorities. I saw that chasing success or building something big just for the sake of it eventually leaves you empty. I wanted my life to have eternal impact.
That’s why we built Spika USA this way. The gear is good — really good — but it’s a bridge. It gets people outside, helps them learn skills, builds confidence, and creates opportunities to talk about what matters most. Whether I’m in the woods with someone or working with our partners at The Life Outdoorz, there’s nothing better than watching a guy harvest his first animal and start to see how the Creator who made all this beauty loves him.
At the end of the day, I want to be known for loving people and pointing them to Jesus more than for any business success. That purpose keeps me grounded no matter what comes — tariffs, trials, or whatever’s next.
