Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thank you for this opportunity. My name is Melissa Angeles, and I founded Chunky Cookies LLC. I was born and raised in Peru and moved to Utah in 2021.
From the day I moved here, opening my own business was my priority, allowing me to manage my time between my family and business. Fear was a stopper and did not let me move forward, I had many unanswered questions, many doubts. One year later, I said to myself it’s now or never. I’ve been a full-time mother that year and enjoyed it. However, I wanted to do something that could make me feel independent.
When I lived in Peru, I used to bake cookies and sell them to my friends, and that’s when I asked myself: Why not do the same here? And that’s when it all started. I began practicing a lot until I got the perfect cookie with the perfect flavor; at the same time, I was finding out how to open a company, all about requirements and permits and especially the possible places to sell. In the summer of 2022, I stopped by different farmers’ markets, wondering how to apply and sell there. Would it be easy? No matter what, I said to myself that I’ll make it happen, and next year, I’ll be selling my cookies in one of these farmer’s markets, I promise.
And so it was: 2023 was my best year, with much learning, making my brand known, and meeting incredible people. I feel so happy when people meet me in different markets and say, “I’m so glad Chunky Cookies is here.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It wasn’t a smooth road for me at all. I think my main problem was always the language. Besides that, I had to go through the process by myself: patent the brand, get my licenses and health permits, and everything related to setting up a company, phone calls, failed faxes, trips to the tax offices, and many new things for me that I could not understand at that moment. Perhaps those things should be easy and fast unless you are the one who makes all of them by yourself.

My business is part of me.
My main focus is to bring sweet and joy to everyone who wants to try cookies filled with different flavors and over all they are home made with dedication and lots of love. I’m known for making fresh cookies with fresh ingredients. I would say that freshness, daily baked and full filled cookies sets me apart from others. I don’t skimp on using the best ingredients.
Any big plans?
The sky is the limit, making my brand well known all over the state will be the beginning and then having my physical stores would be the next step.
