Exploring Life & Business with Miika King of Tone & Texture Ink

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miika King.

Hi Miika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story starts female. And being a woman automatically comes with an accepted level of fear—not limited to fear of society, fear of judgment, and fear of our own bodies. Women experience the weaponization of our bodies, not to mention the unrealistic beauty standards we’re constantly expected to live up to.

For decades, I struggled with stretch marks from puberty and growth—both natural experiences in the human story. Often judged because of my body and stretch marks specifically, I learned shame, and embarrassment that my body betrayed me. Eventually, there was a wave of celebration around stretch marks—but I didn’t align with that either. I was torn between the struggle of having stretch marks and confusion that I didn’t like them, even though society was telling me that I should embrace them. Ultimately, I had to tune out the noise and ask myself what I wanted, apart from what different corners of society told me I should feel. And I realized—I didn’t like them. And that was okay. If you read about stretch marks, publications always state that they are not physically harmful. Rarely do they acknowledge the mental toll they can take on a person’s well-being.

When I discovered paramedical tattooing—specifically scar and stretch mark camouflage—I was in disbelief. I tried it for myself and loved the results. I could finally represent myself the way I chose to. But it didn’t stop there. I wanted to help others who had struggled with self-confidence, and I wanted to create a safe space for them.

Eventually, I earned my certification and opened Tone & Texture Ink, with a focus on bodily autonomy. Bodily autonomy is a crucial component of human rights, yet it’s often overlooked. Its importance is rooted in so many things, and again, a lot of it centers around being female. Some of the core principles include consent, empowering clients to speak up if they feel uncomfortable, and feeling free to want something for yourself—just basic standards that everyone deserves.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first year with Tone & Texture Ink was a time where I experienced an unknown. It was wild and I can honestly say this has been one of the toughest periods of my life. From the legal obligations of being a small business owner to the responsibility, safety, and trust of each client who sits in my chair. Every facet of a small business has been its own challenge. And that doesn’t even touch on my duties as a tattoo artist.

I started this venture to help people, so every decision I make is centered around ensuring the safety of myself, my clients, and all future clients. From what I’ve experienced, scars and stretch marks often come with mental and emotional impacts—sometimes clients just need someone to talk to. Sitting in that chair can be an incredibly vulnerable experience, both physically and mentally. It can feel overwhelming and even scary. For someone to trust me during that process is truly an honor, and I place a great deal of respect in my clients.

That being said, I also don’t want to be part of the problem. I try to be very intentional with the words and phrases I use because the last thing I want to do is promote a specific “beauty standard.” I don’t want to demonize scars and stretch marks, but I do want to give clients the opportunity to explore and define what they want—for themselves.

I place a high value on bodily autonomy, authenticity, and empowering true self-representation. I often use the tagline “Take Your Body Back” because it illustrates the opportunity to take control of your physical representation while also invoking the fundamental, indisputable human right to make decisions for your body and stand up for it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Tone & Texture Ink?
Not only do I provide scar and stretch mark camouflage services, but I also personally offer Saline Tattoo Lightening, a viable alternative to laser tattoo removal. However, I am very aware of my artistic limitations, which is why I brought on a classic tattoo artist who is beyond her years. She is an amazing talent, and I’m so excited to showcase her abilities. I’m always looking to give artists a chance to shine and spotlight talented, motivated individuals. Having a collaborative and progressive team empowers my studio to offer more services and flexibility while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
As mentioned earlier, I know my limitations, but they’re not only artistic. I have a full-time job that I have to maintain but my passion centers around helping the community. Unfortunately, I can’t focus the time and effort Tone & Texture Ink deserves but with any venture, my goal has always been to assist those in need. While some of my services deeply resonate with individuals looking to regain confidence, work toward a better lifestyle, or simply move past an old version of themselves, I also want to utilize this business to support communities in other ways, such as sponsoring educational opportunities or creating art programs. Earlier this year, I participated as a Community Partner in the Utah Expungement Summit, and I’m hoping to reach more communities in need—particularly individuals at a developmental stage of their lives who are ready to move forward. If my services can help anyone cultivate a thriving future and a better version of themselves, then I will have fulfilled exactly what I set out to do with my business.

Tone & Texture Ink is an extension of myself. It’s not just a brand or business; it’s a vehicle to fulfill what I truly want to do—help others.
