Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Tallman.
Hi Nancy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After 9/11/01, the US faced a recession and my husband lost his executive position. I had two babies and was living in my dream home in Manhattan Beach, California. My family faced the reality that we would need to expand the job search beyond Southern California. I told my husband I would move “anywhere people go on vacation.” In March 2003, we moved to Park City, Utah. It was the best thing that could have happened to us.
Being a stay at home mom didn’t work for me. By November 2003, I obtained my real estate license and began part-time work. Once my kids were old enough for all day pre-school, in 2006, I spent every spare minute building my real estate business.
Fast forward to the present–for the last several years my production has been in the top 1% of all realtors in the US. I have three other licensed agents who work with me. My website, insideparkcityrealestate.com, attracts over 5,000 unique views every month. I have been publishing a weekly real estate blog on my website for more than 10 years and have a loyal following.
I ran the Park City marathon, half marathon, and in 2010 began CrossFit. I am also a certified yoga instructor. Fitness is important to me and helps balance my intense workload. My kids are now grown. At the time of this interview, my daughter is a senior at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and my son graduated from the University of Utah Honor’s College cum laude. I advise younger working moms that they can have a career and still raise happy, successful children. I like to think I am a good role model for my kids, showing that if you are intentional about your work, you can achieve success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When the housing market crashed in 2009, we found ourselves financially leveraged like many others, with real estate investments that required stressful monthly payments. My real estate business was pretty consistent, but was difficult to expand in such a challenging housing market. At his time, my husband was recruited for a high-level executive position in Los Angeles. It was a great career move for him, but I didn’t want to leave the beautiful life and business I had created in Park City, Utah. So although I was used to my husband’s frequent travel, from 2009-18, he was gone from Monday through Friday. That meant I was a single mom during the week, balancing work and raising an 8 and 9-year-olds. My husband retired during my son’s senior year in high school, when my kids were 17 and 18.
I worked my business, served on non-profit boards, and became the President of the Park City Board of Realtors. By 2016, I realized that I had indeed taken on too much. I decided that I needed to focus on (1) my health, (2) my family, (3) my business. Everything else had to take a back seat. Once I established these priorities, my business took off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I coined the term “real estate strategist,” but I am a licensed realtor in the state of Utah. I specialize in Park City, Utah and the neighboring communities in Summit and Wasatch counties. My involvement with non-profit boards, professional service to the Park City Board of Realtors, and my high level of production have created my impeccable professional reputation, both locally and around the United States. But of course, it’s my devoted and effective service to my real estate clients that truly sets me apart. If you ask my clients or read their online reviews, you will know that I am very professional, responsive, and a savvy negotiator. I know my business inside and out. This creates an advantage for my clients. I am affiliated with Summit Sotheby’s International Realty, the market leader in Park City real estate. Our company’s philosophy is “luxury is not a price point, but an experience.” I provide personalized care to each client, whether their property is listed at $160,000 or $7,500,000. I work with 3 other licensed professionals. This means that an agent always shows each of our listings and ensures all the features and benefits are conveyed to the buyer and buyer’s agent. The home is then secured after the showing and feedback is immediately provided. We leave nothing to chance. Whether we work with a buyer or seller, the same process is followed so nothing falls through the cracks. This ensures our clients have a great experience and successful outcome.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Things that make me happy:
I love when I call a client and tell them “I found the perfect house for you” and then they agree and buy it. Or, I’m showing a listing and I think “this person is going to buy this house.” After you work in the business a long time, and if you pay attention, you begin to have a 6th sense.
I love it when a difficult negotiation comes together. Last year an agent and I were negotiating on behalf of a CEO and a CFO of two large public companies. It took 3 weeks and 11 addenda, but we put the deal together and it turned out to be a win-win for everyone involved.
I love taking my dog out for walks on the Park City trails, especially in the summer. There is no better place than Park City in the summer.
I love spending time with my kids and marveling at the amazing grown-ups they have become.
I love waking up at 4am during the week, spending time by myself in the dark, and planning my day. This is my quiet time. At 5:15am, I start my CrossFit workout and it’s often the best hour of the day as I push myself physically and mentally.
