Exploring Life & Business with Oscar Word of Bryce Canyon Scenic Tours and Shuttle Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Word

Hi Oscar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Tropic, a small town beneath the pink cliffs of Bryce Canyon. I have many fond memories of hiking, biking, and camping with friends, family, and with the local scout troupes. My brothers and I in particular spent more hours than I can count amongst the different canyons, forests, plateaus, valleys, cliffs, and more. This is our home. Making a living out here consisted mostly of travel-driven jobs such as hotel or restaurant duties, but after we finished, most days we made sure to get outside and do what we loved in one of the prettiest places in the world. In 2016 with a little bit of luck, we could spend our days doing what we enjoyed most full time, and started guiding people through Bryce Canyon National Park. This opportunity has allowed us to share the importance of the National Park system, and its people who are the valiant stewards of these majestic lands.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is definitely full of ups and downs. We found that having a dream that you’re passionate about can sometimes be the easy part, and the first step of an ongoing formula. Certifications, licensing, permits, insurance, taxes, marketing, global pandemics, and ever-evolving studies are just a few of the challenges and intricacies that cropped up along the way. However, I had a good support system including my wife, family, friends, and community. With some help along the way, a pinch of luck, and a boat-load of persistence we’ve navigated each new obstacle life threw our way.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our small business was founded by locals born and raised in the Bryce Canyon Country. We are a small adventure and transportation company. We offer guided public and private tours, mountain bike and e-bike rentals, as well as transportation in and around the Bryce Canyon area. Our love and knowledge of the Bryce area is what sets us apart. We get to show you the magic that is our home through the eyes of a local. Explaining the flora, fauna, history, and geology all while taking you to our favorite spots along the way is what we love to do. Slowly but surely locals and National Park lovers alike have joined our team and together, we get to share our experiences and make new friends along the way. Our team is thrilled to teach you the significance of Bryce Canyon and our protected lands every day, and that is awesome.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’ve been involved in some form of tourism/hospitality work for most of my life, and overall tourism has consistently been on the rise. Barring any world catastrophes, I think this will continue to be the trend. Thanks to modern tech like smart phones and social media, more and more people have been exposed to more and more beautiful places throughout the world. I’ve talked to soooo many people who have said they are visiting Bryce because a friend of theirs sent them a picture.
