Exploring Life & Business with Tanner Alder of Grind Your Golf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Alder.

Hi Tanner, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve played the game of golf for as long as I can remember. In fact, my father got me started when I was only 4 years old. I played a lot of junior golf tournaments and eventually made it on the high school team at Bonneville High in Ogden Utah. After graduation, I accepted a full-ride scholarship to play Collegiate golf where I eventually graduated with a Business Management Degree from Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma.

After moving back to Utah, I turned professional and joined the PGA of America as an Assistant Golf Professional at the Ogden City Golf Courses. I quickly realized that although I may be good at the game of golf, there were a lot of guys out there that were much, much better than I was. I submitted for my amateur status in 2018 and now enjoy playing in the amateur circuit here in Utah.

I first started doing what I do now to golf clubs and golf accessories in 2018 when I found a few Instagram accounts that were turning their equipment into “function art”. I bought my first sand blaster shortly after and haven’t looked back since. In the beginning, I was set up in the back of my brother’s house in an old garage and would stick vinyl stickers to the wedges and create different designs by blasting the club with different media out of a sandblaster. It was a great place to start and I was quickly supported by my family and friends in my new business idea.

I look back on those first few wedges I did in 2018 and cannot help but smile as I look at the progress of the design layouts and the quality of work has improved so much.

It wasn’t until early 2021 when a friend convinced me to invest in a Fiber Laser to take the functional art that a golf club could hold to the next level. The Fiber Lasers allow me to deep engrave and color fill the designs to really make a wedge stand out and bring the player’s personality to their equipment.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a very flashy individual, but I love the way that I can bring subtle designs to life on my own wedges and ball marks that get the players in my group asking questions and admiring the detail of work that has been taken to create such unique and fun golf clubs.

I look forward to growing Grind Your Golf in the future and maybe one day bringing your style, to your clubs.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Growing Grind Your Golf over the years has not always been easy. Running a small business is never an easy task, you are essentially doing everything from marketing to shipping and everything in between on a daily basis. I’m fortunate enough to have the support of my wonderful wife, Megan to help me out when I have a late-night project that needs to get out the door the next day.

Luckily for the game of golf, it was one of the few things that really grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is when I saw the most business as it was a way for my clients to express themselves during their casual rounds of golf when they did get to see their friends.

It has been easy, but it certainly could have been worse. I am blessed to have those friends and family who surround me be so supportive.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Grind Your Golf specializes in custom golf clubs and golf goodies. We are able to put any logo or design on a club and color the design to fit your personality. I’ve done everything from wedding party gifts to memorial pieces that mean the world to my clients.
