Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Smith.
Hi Tom, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story started young, spending summers at remote gold mining camps with my dad and grandpa. I thrived on the freedom of the outdoors—running heavy machinery, chasing that next big nugget, and learning early what hard work really means. By high school, I was taking it to another level: scuba diving in the icy Bering Strait with a suction dredge. Those experiences built a rock-solid work ethic and sparked a lifelong love for hands-on adventure.
College brought a welcome change of scenery. I traded the cold Alaskan waters for the island life at BYU-Hawaii, where I dove into entrepreneurship, sales, and marketing. It was the perfect foundation for what came next.
After graduating, I returned to Utah and helped a friend scale several Bajío Mexican Grill locations. That time was eye-opening—it helped me discover what truly lights me up: small businesses, brand building, and the art of sales. Over the next decade, I honed those skills in various sales roles until I felt ready to step out on my own, consulting on brand development, sales teams, and streamlined processes.
I spent years helping others grow their dreams, then a friend and I saw an opportunity: a tree removal company for sale. We jumped in, grew it steadily by adding a tree healthcare division and a holiday decor arm, and eventually sold the whole operation to a national chain. It was a thrilling ride and a great lesson in scaling with purpose.
That success led me to launch Sasquatch Jobs, starting with dirt work and dumpster rentals in Utah’s cabin communities across Utah County, Salt Lake, and Park City. It quickly evolved into a full-service odd-jobs operation for commercial, residential, and even government clients—everything from clearing beaver dams to building fish cleaning stations and carving roads/driveways into rugged campgrounds and cabins.
What I love most now is the perfect balance: crafting a fun, quirky brand like Sasquatch Jobs, getting my hands dirty with heavy machinery amid Utah’s stunning landscapes, and integrating smart software and efficient processes to keep everything running smoothly. It blends the raw adventure of the outdoors with modern efficiency—every day feels fresh, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
Looking back, every step—from gold panning as a kid to building and selling businesses—has taught me resilience, creativity, and the joy of serving my community. Utah’s wild beauty and entrepreneurial spirit keep fueling me, and I’m excited to keep growing Sasquatch Jobs while inspiring others to embrace their own unconventional paths.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path has been far from conventional—full of pivots and changes that, for years, left me wrestling with ‘what do I want to be when I grow up?’ That uncertainty created a lot of self-inflicted anxiety and pressure.
But those twists taught me resilience. I’ve learned to embrace my core: loving hands-on adventure, building brands, and the outdoors. My biggest motivator now is creating freedom for my family and focusing on the work I truly enjoy.
Today, with Sasquatch Jobs, I prioritize the journey over the destination. Challenges still pop up, but they’ve helped me align my life with what matters most—making every day feel rewarding and free.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely played a part in my career, but most of my ‘lucky’ breaks only happened after years of grinding in sales, consulting, and yeah, some failures along the way.
I feel super blessed to have grown up in Utah County around great people who showed me what real work ethic and community look like. That foundation made a huge difference—it opened doors and gave me folks to lean on when things got tough.
As time’s gone on, I’ve gotten way better at trusting my gut.
Sasquatch Jobs is my 8th business since college, and it definitely won’t be the last. I love the creation process and building stuff. So most of all, I feel lucky to be doing something I really enjoy.
