Hidden Gems: Meet Andrea Moore of Courageous Corner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Moore.

Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I studied Family and Human Development along with Marriage and Family Therapy at Utah Stae University. During that time, I was assigned a practicum at The Children’s Center in Salt Lake City. It was during this time, of undergraduate studies, that I fell in love with helping children and their big emotions.

Though, life has a funny way of teaching us the lessons we most desire. As I completed my studies, my husband was offered a job in Ohio, while at the same time we adopted a baby unexpectedly. As we unexpectedly became parents we immediately had many developmental and emotional concerns for this child. We learned that she had experienced remarkable neglect and abuse before coming to our family. So began, the journey of understanding abuse and the result it has on a child and her development. It was after raising my family, that I returned to school to earn a MSW at Univeristy of Southern California in Social Work, 2017.

It has been a personal and professional journey of learning to bring me to running a private practice that specializes in children and families who experience trauma, and difficult life experiences, Courageous Corner, PLLC. . In this corner of the therapy world, I use play to foster healing, and other trauma informed practices for the most gentle and supportive approach.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a parent, of a child who has experienced trauma, we struggled to understand the symptoms she was experiencing and how to best help her thrive. At the time, there wasn’t a lot of research on the effects of trauma and clinical interventions to help children and families heal. We often cried many tears of helplessness and a desire to know more, to be able to do more.

While studying at USC, I found it very challenging to raise 4 active, tweens and teenagers while completing a full time internship and school. I would say we worked together, but it was a lot of late nights, early mornings and tag teaming.

After my graduation from USC, I was diagnosed with a rare presentation of Stage IV breast cancer. Where I took 18 months off for treatment and healing. This family experience taught our family to work together, look out for one another, and make the most of the moment.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Courageous Corner, PLLC is a place that specializes in children who experience big and uncomfortable emotions. I specialize in children, trauma, and adoption. It is through play, connection, and trauma informed care that children and caregivers learn tools to manage emotions, and reduce symptoms of difficult life experiences.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m in a profession where consistency and predictability matter. Though I do think that starting my own private practice was risky. It can be scary to start something on your own. There’s a learning curve of defining what you stand for, and how you want to grow those principles in a helpful and rewarding way.
