Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Davis.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Brandon, owner of Parr’s Mobile Mini Golf. I’ve always loved mini golf since I was a kid, and I grew up playing on a little neighborhood 9-hole course called Dotties, where we would go probably once a week as a family during the summers. I also have vivid memories of playing mini golf at the Fun Dome (originally the 49th Street Galleria) and the indoor course at Hollywood Connection.
My wife and I were talking one night about how a lot of mini golf courses, including the three I mentioned, have closed down and how there are only a few options left in the valley. I told her how fun it would be to open my own course, and that is when we came up with the idea for a mobile course. We decided that same night that I would quit my job and get to work on it.
A year and 11 holes built later, I’m really glad we made that decision! My main goal is to open my own modern indoor mini golf complex, with multiple courses, and mobile mini golf has been such a great place to start and scale from. I love seeing others enjoy the course at their parties and events, and bringing something unique that they have never seen before.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was actually really daunted starting out with building the course. My wife and I had built pop-up exhibits for a previous company we ran for a few years, but I had never done anything to this scale. I struggled a lot with the fear of failure. I would let myself get overly anxious when preparing to build a new hole. I learned, though, that when I just got to work on the course, and failed, and failed again, my overall trajectory was still moving forward–and I got better at it as I went.
So yes, I have spent way more money on the course than I initially thought, and it took way longer than I anticipated–with a lot of small injuries along the way, including stitches to the hand–but I am so glad that I kept moving forward. I never thought I would get to the point that I would have a full 9-hole course that I could fit all in one trailer, and I never thought I would create something that any customer would actually enjoy.
That is the best part after this whole journey of building, and figuring out the other intricacies of running a business, to see customers really excited about having the course set up for them, and to see them actually enjoy playing on it. Looking forward and making plans for a permanent course is also really daunting, but I know I can keep moving forward and work through the failures, and create something I am really proud of.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Parr’s Mobile Mini Golf is a premium entertainment rental company, with our flagship rental being our 9-hole mobile mini golf course.
Just for a little background, before starting Parr’s, I most recently came from being the window display designer for the downtown Deseret Book store. While working there, I created displays such as a dining room with a bird’s-eye view that hung sideways from the wall, a fantastical pirate ship made out of books, and a larger-than-life Christmas tree with spinning ornaments that took up the whole 20-foot window.
I also previously ran a company called the Humanitarium, where we built pop-up exhibits for nonprofits, telling their stories through immersive experiences. I love building and creating things that genuinely excite others and that also have a novel spin.
At Parr’s, we thrive in novel ideas and premium products, from having the largest mobile mini golf course, the only golf pool table, and the only giant chess set rental in the valley. We love bringing things that people have never seen at a party or event before, and that are really fun to play to boot.
When you book with Parr’s, we promise to bring your party to the next level and to leave our customers and their guests with a unique and fun experience that they will be talking about long after.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I love making customers 100% happy with their rentals. It is my favorite thing to try to exceed a customer’s expectations and to see them fully enjoying our products. I constantly work to improve the customer experience, and I would say that is the hallmark of our brand.
