Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Blomberg, co-founder of Blomberg Music Productions.
Hi Daniel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Although running a music production company together seems like an obvious choice for my wife Kathryn and me now, it took quite a while to figure it out.
I started making music as a little kid – piano and vocals. By age 6, I was on national TV in my native Sweden, performing with my older sister in a competition. By age 18, I had written a bunch of songs (mostly for my rock band), and had learned to arrange music—that is, put together several instruments and voices to make a complete production. At age 21, I moved to the US and started studying music at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT.
That’s also where I later met my wife, Kathryn. We got married in 2003. Kathryn had gone the vocalist route, and joined just about every singing group that public school allowed for. She also took piano lessons and minored in music in college. She figured out early on that music was a powerful tool to bless and serve other people. When we met, her perspective influenced me significantly. Most of my professors held similar views of music as a tool for service, and I started seeing music not just as a career, but as a calling, an opportunity to change the world for good.
Kathryn graduated in 2005 and I in 2007. By the time of my graduation, we had two little sons and had made the decision that I would pursue graduate studies in international relations in the UK, which would lead to a more stable income for our growing family. After grad school, we moved to Sweden to make sure our kids got exposure to both our native languages and cultures. The next 8 years saw me teaching school, working for the government, and then teaching at a university in Amman, Jordan. Some time in there, we started feeling like it was time to get back into music.
By early 2018, I had contacted an old college friend (Dave Zimmerman, owner of Noisebox Studios), and we started producing music together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know that there’s a single business on planet Earth that always has a smooth road. Every startup has to deal with issues of cash flow, organizing your efforts, and prioritizing your time, and we have definitely not been exempt from any of those challenges. And I think there’s a real beauty in that because now that we are doing music business coaching, we’ve been there; we know what other people are going through because we’ve gone through it ourselves.
We cherish the memories of the challenges, even though we didn’t necessarily cherish them at the time. It’s been a bunch of challenges, and we love how they have shaped us and now help us serve others better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Blomberg Music Productions offers music production services, music business coaching, and songwriting courses for Christian musicians. We help people level up their music ministries and serve God through music.
On the music production side, our commitment to superior quality in all that we do makes us different. There are dozens (literally) of music producers just in the few counties around us, and we make sure that everything that comes through is of the highest quality, and that it’s done in partnership with the client and in partnership with the Lord.
I love that we have a clientele who is passionate about making the world a better place, and that we have been able to create a culture where it’s a win, win, win, win—every transaction, every conversation. Everything we do should be a win for our clients, our company, our contractors, and the community.
If you have a dream for your music, we want you to know that with the right team, it’s not as hard as you think. You can have a professionally produced song out on YouTube in a matter of weeks, no matter where you’re at today.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
