Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Ashton.
Hi Doug, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Enhance Physical Therapy began in the fall of 2023 in response to many family and friends asking about coming to see me for physical therapy. I have always wanted to have my own physical therapy clinic and decided to begin. Thanks to the support of friends and family, I was able to set up my own small business. I especially get to thank Taralyn Sorenson, the owner of Beyond Sports Taekwondo, who has allowed me to rent space in her facility to treat patients. I have always been motivated to hone my skills as a physical therapist in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients. This desire led me to enroll in the Fellowship program offered by the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy. The training provided by this Fellowship has allowed me to broaden my knowledge, skills and ability to treat patients with innovative techniques. Feeling confident, I have started to work with several local gyms by offering free workshops and consultations for those with questions regarding various physical conditions. This has allowed me to grow my business and help more and more people live without pain and with improved quality of life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path to building the business that I have today has been a learning process over many years. Even back when I was in physical therapy school at Rocky Mountain University of Health professions I had the desire to one day own my own business. I even created my own LLC, called Ashton Therapies, to start building something that would blend my background in physical fitness and wellness with my new knowledge of physical therapy. I lasted 2 years and had to give it up due to a lack of revenue and feeling that I really needed to learn more about my new profession and how to run a business.
I moved to Colorado and took a job with a brand new clinic and worked very hard to learn how to grow a successful clinic. The owner and I became good friends and I was able to become a manager for her as the clinic grew. Eventually we opened a second clinic and I began to manage that clinic and watch it grow. I was learning the importance of business solutions in the form of proven systems that my friend had learned from her business partners. I eventually decided to partner with these same people to open a new clinic in Utah and finally have all the resources I needed to have my own clinic. Unfortunately, 5 months into our partnership and before we had even opened our new clinic, everything shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I took whatever jobs I could at this point in my career. I taught at Provo College in their PTA program and worked at a small clinic in West Valley City and then at a big clinic in Orem. Things began to get back to normal and I again wanted to start my own clinic, but I had a new philosophy and different goals this time. I got good training in making a cash based physical therapy clinic from other PTs who had done the same thing and become quite successful. I enlisted help from a marketer and other local businesses and the growth has been surprising given my previous experiences.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Enhance Physical Therapy is my own cash based private practice that specializes in quality, state of the art physical therapy services. I have over 10 years of experience and numerous hours of continuing education in hands on therapy techniques that allow me to assist others to move their bodies without pain or difficulty. I pride myself on being able to take my time (appointments are 60 minutes long) and treat my patients with the utmost care that is not dictated by what insurance companies say they will or won’t pay for. I am answerable only to my patients and want to get them into the best possible condition to improve their health and well being. My training as an Osteopractor allows me to use joint manipulation and dry needling techniques along with various other tools to improve tissue healing and address the entire body. I can do this for a variety of injuries and conditions too numerous to mention here and I am willing to talk with anyone about any way I can assist them.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Thanks to my Fellowship training, I appreciate all of the research articles and other publications put out by the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy. This assists me to continue to learn and grow my professional skills.
