Hidden Gems: Meet Elias Horat of Creates Cool

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elias Horat.

Hi Elias, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Although I was born in California,I spent less than the first year of my life there. I was raised in the Big Sky country of Montana. After studying architecture in undergrad and grad school in Montana, I moved to San Francisco where I began my profession and became an Architect. I have since enjoyed many years around the area and most recently enjoyed working across the country, and living part-time in Salt Lake City. It was in the Bay Area that I founded Creates Cool, a versatile architecture and design studio. I have now had the pleasure of serving a diversity in clients and project types. It’s our mission to design for anyone by making great designs through a transparent process that is not only economical but promote healthier, happier lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I I founded Creates Cool in the middle of a pandemic, so to say it was a smooth road would be a complete understatement. We did have many silver linings including the ease and acceptance of remote work, and many city building departments also going digital. But while all of that was happening, we also strapped on masks to measure clients’ homes, and had to work with quickly changing systems, deadlines, supply chain issues, and moving targets for clients’ designs. Thankfully from day one I embraced “learn as we grow” and that’s exactly what we do, treating each paint point as an opportunity to grow and better ourselves from.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Creates Cool is a versatile design studio based in San Francisco, founded in 2020 by a licensed architect and designer Elias Horat. We aim to give our clients the best projects by pairing rigorous conceptual designs with a technology-driven process. We hold ourselves to the philosophy that we do not have one singular style or look; rather, our projects are a product of a collaboration with our clients, sites, and project goals.

We exist to make great designs that are attainable for all. We accomplish this by empowering our team and our clients with innovative resources and knowledge. We strenuously maximize the efficiency of a traditional design process. Our goal is to create a healthy happier working relationship for our clients and our team members. We design for a better life.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Always say hi! It may seem simple or understated but it’s not. The times I have been most frustrated or regretted actions are when I didn’t speak up, or make a connection I should have. Don’t feel that you aren’t worthy of meeting someone, or that a connection may not serve you. It’s always worth a simple hi or hello.
