Hidden Gems: Meet Faye Hutchins of Desert Wild & Indigo Alley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Faye Hutchins.

Hi Faye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Moab, UT in 2008 as a massage therapist. I realized that there was a need for a spa in town. In 2010, I opened Spa Moab. We started with a staff of 4 and it quickly grew to a staff of over 20 and getting fully booked daily.

In 2015, I opened Indigo Alley right next door to the spa. Indigo Alley is a unique and fun clothing store, not your typical tourist town t-shirt shop. Comfortably hip with a twist of desert chic.

In late 2019, I sold Spa Moab to Hilton, Hoodoo. I helped them get Spa Moab settled into its location and up and running. It was a fun experience to watch the spa grow up and move out. In a lot of ways, it was like raising a child.

In 2020, I opened Desert Wild in the location where the spa had previously been. This is my newest project. It’s a clothing and outdoor shop with vintage camping and National Park vibes.

A lot of people ask me if I have a business degree, I do not. I graduated high school a year early and set out to work. I saved enough money to go to massage school. I’ve never received financial help but hard work and determination have paid off. I love running my own businesses!

It’s challenging and always changing. It’s stimulating and rewarding.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always peaks and valleys in life and business but 2020 was pretty rough.

We had just opened Desert Wild and 12 days later had to shut the store down for months. We had no idea what would happen at that time and Desert Wild didn’t qualify for financial aid or any of the loans. Also, the supply shortages and employee shortages have hit us. We are just working through their creativity.

Finding vendors and artists closer to home. And Celebrating the amazing staff we do have.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Faye Hutchins- the owner of Indigo Alley and Desert Wild in downtown Moab, UT.

We work hard at curating unique products that other stores in town don’t have. We try and find vendors that “Do Good” like Cotopaxi, Tentree and Keep Nature Wild to name a few. A local artist in town Joey Howell designed a custom graphic for us to print on shirts. We have locally made jewelry.

We believe in community and have donated to local non-for-profit like Science Moab, Underdog Rescue, and Youth Garden Project.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Come to Moab and shop our stores. Follow us on Instagram. We currently don’t have an online store.
