Today we’d like to introduce you to Gimenia Palmer.
Hi Gimenia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and moved to Utah at the age of 24 to pursue higher education and professional growth. Coming to a new country meant learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and proving myself in spaces where I was often underestimated. Still, I was determined to build a meaningful career in education.
In 2007, I earned my Montessori certification and began working as a Montessori teacher. While I loved teaching, I also experienced moments that pushed me to reconsider my future. I was judged for my accent and questioned about my ability to teach in English. Those experiences revealed not only personal challenges, but also professional limitations within traditional employment. Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to grow, I would need to build something of my own.
With the support of my husband, I made the difficult decision to leave a financially stable position and open an in-home preschool. That decision became the foundation of My Child’s Montessori.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting an in-home preschool came with significant challenges. One of the greatest struggles was enrollment. Because the program operated from my home, many parents initially assumed it was simply a daycare or play space—not a school led by a certified Montessori educator. Earning trust and credibility took time, patience, and consistency. I had to clearly communicate the value of the Montessori method and demonstrate, through my work, that children were receiving a high-quality educational experience
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our mission is to provide affordable, high-quality Montessori education to families in our community. We believe early childhood education should focus not only on academic readiness, but also on independence, concentration, and emotional development. In today’s technology-driven environment, the Montessori method offers children hands-on learning experiences that encourage problem-solving, self-confidence, and meaningful engagement with their surroundings.
We offer small groups ratio, Certified Montessori instructor, native Spanish speaker teachers, field trip experience, well clean and organized environment, and currently we are working to be licensed to teach Play Therapy into our curriculum in order to facilitate those students that has anxiety or any other needs.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In 5 years we will love to see that the idea of attending to an in home preschool isn’t about “play time a couple hours” that we provide a high quality early childhood education that will prepare a child for success in the next years of school.
