Hidden Gems: Meet Hilary Dawn Herrera of HDH

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Dawn Herrera.

Hi Hilary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started nails back in 2003 as I was at university getting my degrees in education. It was a fantastic way to make money and have flexibility. When I graduated, I found I didn’t enjoy teaching in the school system, I was making way more money doing nails, and I was starting a family with my husband Quin, so I kept doing nails. Fast forward through many years of ups and downs with my husband’s career I was able to provide an income for my family and still be present with them. I was encouraged to become an instructor about 10 years into doing nails. I loved education and it was a great fit. I started licensing numerous artists in my state and then I grew to teach my own classes. I have since partnered up with many brands that I love and I travel all over and teach and certify in continued education and business. My husband and I own a nail salon, Lacquered Loft, together that he runs fully while I am focused on facilitating others’ careers. My website hdhhub.com includes all my in-person class registrations, numerous online classes, and all the products and tools that I have found and buy that work for me. I have been able to connect with artists all over the world and help facilitate and launch them into very successful careers, I find it very fulfilling.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! There were days that I had to have my last client show up and if they didn’t, I wouldn’t have money to buy diapers to put on my babies when they went to bed that night. I learned the hard way what it was like when I made things too personal and didn’t approach things like a business. I had to learn things constantly and still do because of the development of new products and tools and methods and techniques. Learning how to navigate inside a salon environment was always a teaching lesson, and now I feel I am able to facilitate a very healthy and fun working culture in my own salon because of the things I have learned. When I stepped into salon ownership I made many mistakes, had a lot of heartaches, and even considered stopping. I am so happy I haven’t stopped as the lessons I have learned are now helping so many others in their careers.

We’ve been impressed with HDH, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business HDH grew out of all of my experiences within the nail industry. Through it I do in personal trainings, consultations, provide online classes for all over the world, travel and teach beauty shows, work with brands I love, and even make passive income through affiliate marketing. I am known for my education style, that is very relatable and full of value. I am also known for my warmth and my love of people and seeing them succeed. I am probably most proud of the fact that I can pick any location and announce I’m teaching a class and people from my crew show up. Those connections are indescribable and I’m so very grateful. My presence on social media is a huge role in this, my Instagram @HilaryDawnHerrera, as I provide a ton of free education on there and then help them access my website hdhhub.com for even more. We talk real-life things, topics that are not often discussed but help us relate as humans on my social media. The connections all over the world are priceless.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Man, we live at a great time with technology. I love using resources such as Square, PayPal, my streaming platform, Instagram etc. for my business. I am hoping to produce an app for those who want the support in the careers here soon.
