Hidden Gems: Meet Holli Jacobsen of Holli Jacobsen Interior Design (HJID)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holli Jacobsen .

Holli Jacobsen

Hi Holli, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Yeah, sure! I graduated with a 4-year degree in Interior Design from CIDA accredited (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) Weber State University in 2022. Subsequently, I sat for the first part of the 3-part NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) exam and am currently working toward qualifying to sit for the remaining 2 sections.

Shortly after that I started my residential interior design business, Holli Jacobsen Interior Design (HJID). Since starting my business, I’ve had the opportunity to work with great clients on a variety of projects!

My very first project was a home office, followed by a great room and primary suite remodel. Soon after that I picked up several kitchen remodels. I’m currently working with eight clients on a variety of projects ranging in scale from space planning, furniture procurement, to larger scale remodels and new builds.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve learned so much since beginning my business and yes, learning curves can be steep! But they’re also what’s helped me grow. These are my 3 biggest challenges and struggles:

1) Overcoming self-doubt, fear of failure, and harmful comparisons. Being consistently pushed out of my comfort zone when meeting new clients and vendors, facing new challenges, and having to figure something out for the first time, etc. is also challenging!

2) Running the business aspect of HJID has been a learning curve and continues to be as I strive to continually improve my processes. It’s always evolving!

3) Learning everything I DIDN’T learn in design school…ha ha! The daily ins and outs such as where to source items for my projects, finding good trade professionals to work with, etc. It all takes time, research, and experience, which I am slowly gaining.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work hard to make my clients happy! I’m very detail oriented and dependable. I’m fair with my pricing and am willing to take on small projects as well as big ones! I feel good design should be accessible to everyone, in any price range.

Space planning is my super power! I am really good at laying out a room in order to accommodate user needs as well as leave room for good circulation/flow. I can also marry form and function really well. I strongly believe that form and function should always coexist!

What are your plans for the future?
Every year I set a goal/plan for my business. The first year goal was to earn enough money from my design business to equal or exceed what I invested in pursuing my interior design degree. I achieved that goal!

My goal/plan this year is to land a few larger projects and possibly hire my first employee.

A future goal I’d like to achieve is to own my own design firm with several employees, working on 10-15 larger projects/year.

Lastly, getting published in a reputable design periodical is a goal I’ve always hoped for!
