Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Rowley.
Hi Jamie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business about 7 years ago when I hit a really rough stage in life and became a single mom to my three kiddos. I was working a part-time job as an office manager for a therapist in Utah and had no idea how I was going to provide for my family.
When I went to work, my boss would let me bring my littlest one with me, and she would sit on the floor next to me and play or watch a movie or need a snuggle. He encouraged me to consider becoming a biller and taking over his billing, but I wasn’t interested. He continued to encourage me that this was something I could do from home and not have to put my daughter in daycare. I could even start a viable business and provide billing for other behavioral health specialists.
I went home and thought about it. What finally won me over was the fact I could do it from home and be home with my kids. What I didn’t realize was the difficulty of starting something I didn’t know much about. My boss gave me his laptop and two referrals for other therapists who needed billing services as well. From my kitchen table with the help of a few friends, Kairos Billing solutions was birthed.
I can’t even begin to tell you how grateful I am for that first therapist. He enabled me to be a working woman and a mom at the same time. I was still terrified though. One of my dear friends told me, ‘Just go with it! You will be amazed how many people around you want to see you be successful and want to help.’
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting and growing a business is a complete roller coaster ride. One week I love running my own business; the next week is just plain hard. We have lost clients who provide 75% of our revenue because they outgrew us; we’ve experienced the consequences of making bad business decisions.
Yet, in 2020 my business grew exponentially. I went from 22 providers to currently have 119, and we are adding more every month. I didn’t go to college, so I sometimes feel like I have no idea what I am doing. But through a lot of trial and error, we are where we are, and I feel that I probably have learned and will continue to learn exactly what I need to.
I’m a huge believer that life is all about the messy and through the messy comes such beauty.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We handle the billing and credentialing needs of mental health providers in private practices and groups.
Often we help them start their private practices and watch them grow. We also know the importance of how these therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors serve our communities in helping people navigate the difficulties that life can bring.
Kairos keeps the money flowing, so providers can do what they are best at.
What matters most to you?
People matter. Life matters. Being able to be a present parent, a business owner, and a healthy person are huge priorities for me. Mental health matters. I have personally lost several people in my life to mental health issues. Good therapists are a gift to this world.
I believe in encouraging women who don’t know how to start or what to do, to just take the first step, then the next, and the next. I now have 10 team members and every one of them works from home and every one of them has a reason or need to do so. What a privilege that I get to help others in situations similar to mine 7 years ago.
It can be so scary, but you will find so many people around that want to see you succeed. Just keep looking for them. When you support, buy from, or work with small businesses like mine, you’re part of a bigger story. We can do this one step at a time! People matter. Life matters.
