Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Hubbs
Hi Jenni, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jenni Hubbs and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m a mother of two young children, aged five and two. Speed skating and staying active is my lifestyle. I am also a business owner, investor, and decluttering expert.
I was born and raised in Finland. The first 27 years of my life I followed a pretty traditional path graduating with a master’s degree in economic sciences. When it was time to start my career in Finland, I decided to go all in with speed skating, which I had been competing in for several years. I sold everything I owned and moved to Germany in late 2014. In May 2015, I relocated to Calgary, Canada, to train with a new team, where I met my now-husband, an American from Texas. We married in 2017 and eventually settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, drawn by the exceptional speed skating conditions here.
While waiting for my work and traveling authorizations, I did study a lot about the USA and how the economy works here. Finally, I received my authorizations in January 2018. Since the Olympics were near but it was too late for me to try to qualify, I decided that if the Olympics are not going to happen, I am going to work hard to grow our wealth. I was tired of being broke! So in February 2018 I started working as a Realtor.
Couple years in and my income started to increase but so did my spending habits too. I began accumulating more possessions and wanting more stuff. Thankfully, I was also cautious enough to start investing. We quickly became homeowners, and I began investing in the stock market, setting up a savings account, and establishing a retirement plan. Life seemed to be on track, and we were blessed with two beautiful children. However, after earning six figures for a few years and having our first child, I realized that money was driving my motivation and I was not feeling happier with more stuff and money. Instead I had lost time, creativity, lifestyle and feeling of purpose while doing so.
I continued working with intensity, but when we decided to have our second child, I was exhausted and knew I needed maternity leave. I created a budget and savings plan with my husband’s support, reduced my workload, and began focusing on building my online business. I initially wanted to discuss money and promote financial literacy, but I soon realized that consumption was a bigger issue. This led me to become a decluttering expert, aligning with how I live my life. I want to help others declutter and live more purposefully because reducing consumption benefits not just ourselves but also our families, communities, and the environment. While reduced consumption might challenge some businesses, it encourages them to adapt and embrace positive change. It’s important to be mindful of how our consumption affects our personal lives, relationships, finances, emotions, and the environment. Embracing change and living with less can lead to a more meaningful and responsible life.
Oh and by the way, I am still skating! I am so happy and grateful for everything I have!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As all of us, I also have experienced challenges in my life. In what I refer to as my “previous life,” I experienced financial, emotional, and physical abuse.
My mom was a single mom doing an amazing job! She always worked so hard but yet, we never had money. It was natural for me to start working at the age of 13 and make money for my own needs, sometimes for family’s needs as well.
Living with constant financial insecurity and a mindset of never having enough was incredibly consuming.
When I moved to the USA, I had to recreate my identity from scratch. I was in deep waters, feeling insecure, sad, and frustrated, and at times, I felt as though I had made a foolish decision by leaving everything I knew for love. It didn’t seem rational to me at the time. However, now that I have had the chance to develop and embrace my new identity, I am truly grateful for the unexpected turns my life has taken. I feel like I’m a better person for it—more content, joyful, and confident in my purpose.
I believe my purpose extends beyond being a mother, a speed skater, or holding a degree. It includes using my skills to inspire others to consume less and live more purposefully.
We’ve been impressed with Sustainable Millionaire / Registered as FIT Your Finances LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I want to help people to declutter their lives. By removing the excess and focusing on what truly matters gives us so much joy and peace. Not to mention that we can save lots of time and money too.
I have created two inexpensive online courses – Beginner’s Guide to Stock Market Investing & Budget Mastery. This fall I am planning on building more online courses around the topic of decluttering and reducing while finding more purpose. I might open some spots for an individual or group coaching this fall for all the people who want help with their decluttering journey.
Eventually, I want to write a book and do more speaking engagements.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Salt Lake City mountains are so beautiful and of course the speed skating oval is one of the best places for me to hang out. You learn to appreciate things when you have more perspective. I skated for 10+ years on natural outdoor ice, no matter the weather (which was mostly freezing, windy and snowy).
I also love the outdoor activities and people here!
However, I wish the air quality and public transportation could be better.
