Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Munoz De La Rosa
Hi Jenny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am first generation Mexican American daughter of immigrant parents . I was born in utah but raised in west wendover, nevada. The way I grew up was pretty simple , you know everyone around you . You go to to prek-high school with the same group of kids. To give you an idea of how small my community was , my graduating class was about 29 students. Most of us including myself grew up low income . With very limited resources. As far back as I could remember I’ve always wanted to be a hairstylist . It sparked when I was just a child . Almost always , after my mom would get home from work she would ask me to brush her hair . It was our routine , I would have everything ready , brushes , clips, elastics .I definitely remember giving her crazy styles . It was really fun for me but most importantly it made me feel good that I could do something that will help my mom feel better , she would get really bad migraine so that would help relive tension . And from there I knew I wanted to be a stylist. As I got older I knew I had to leave in order to go after my dream of becoming a hairdresser. So that’s what I did as soon as I turned 18 , I moved to Salt Lake City UT Completed cosmetology school , worked at 2 salon environments . I had to go through several pain points in this process that prepared me for bigger things . It was about taking risks , never looking back & today I am owner of my establishment jenny DLR hair studio in Murray UT.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I definitely hit many challenges a long the way beginning with the move-in . I didn’t know anybody here , I had never driven in traffic before . Not so surprising but I did get in a minor car accident on the first day of school . Being on my own for the first time was really nerve wrecking but I was still very excited about starting my cosmetology career. Moving here was also a huge culture shock . I was pretty naive , I thought that everyone got the same education as I did . I was so wrong ! The more I got to know the girls in my school or just hearing about their lives . I quickly seen how much more people had growing up , how advanced their education was . With so many resources and opportunities. I was very shocked and I think that’s when I realized how low income my schooling was . To give you an idea , it was already embedded in our heads that our high school students weren’t expected to finish more than 4 years of college/university. Learning all of this made me feel like such a minority compared to everyone in the cosmetology school . And on top of that there was very few people of color which also made it feel a little more intimidating. Besides that I did get to make amazing friends along the way . It was extremely difficult to build a clientele, I remember it would be the busy Saturdays where everyone had clients in their chair except me . It did discourage me at times but again I still kept going and I ended up finishing school in 2020 & moved in to a well known reputable salon . And again I had to start fresh, this meant zero clients but lots of faith that I had . It took a very long time to build a clientele I had so many slow days & a hand full of bad experiences that really discouraged me I couldn’t tell you how many times I wanted to just give up . Fast forward I move on to another salon and ended up having a bad experience. I never felt so defeated & drained . I lost so much money I was beyond stressed because I also had more finances to take care of in that time and I wasn’t happy . If your not familiar with the beauty industry, it can be very cut throat . I was in a place where I had other people trying to mold me into something i wasn’t . I felt very disappointed and didn’t know what to do . Eventually I had enough of that and that’s when I put my foot down and changed the direction of my career. So I went solo and became a studio suite owner . I started this new business adventure in June of this year . Of course I was extremely stressed and scared to jump right in but at the same time I couldn’t be any more happier to actually start something of my own. I eliminated other people’s vision for myself , being under limited growth & their perspective of my own worth. Today I am extremely grateful for taking this huge risk because I can finally thrive off of what I built for myself & never look back . I had remained very resilient during all of my challenges in life . My message about all these experiences that I had , is that you have to keep going forward no matter how much you want to quit no matter how discouraged you feel. Being a “ minority” in this country doesn’t mean you can’t be successful .you are deserving of every opportunity just as much as anyone else . Always remember why you started & keep fighting to live the life you dream of. Walk by faith and appreciate the hard times as well .

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is my family . I am really close to my siblings . in my life, my family has been the most supportive throughout everything. Especially my parents, they struggled tremendously to get here and build a foundation for myself & my siblings . They came with very little but they gave us everything we needed. I try to put myself in their shoes and I know I wouldn’t bear what they had to sacrifice . They are the reason why I refuse to give up . I most definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the hard decisions they had to make . Also my faith is very important I believe there isn’t purpose if you don’t walk by any kind of faith . I try to find purpose with anything I’m put in and with the people I cross paths with . I think building connections with people make life special and meaningful. You can learn so much from other peoples perspectives , backgrounds, cultures & experiences. This is actually one of the biggest reasons why I am a hairstylist, I am happy and fulfilled when I make these unique connections & at the time time I get to build so many peoples confidence and make so many women feel beautiful, heard & empowered.
