Hidden Gems: Meet Jorge Fierro of The Fierro Group and Rico Brand

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Fierro.

Hi Jorge, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
24 years ago, I started selling fully cooked pinto beans at the SL downtown farmer’s market, the idea of creating a brand of ready-to-eat Mexican food came to mind and borrowed a small loan from the Utah Microenterprise loan fund of ten thousand dollars. I found an old cafe in a corner of 5th east 800 south and later became Rico Mexican Market & Catering, Rico products became popular, and I was approached by small market chain and started selling a handful of products, then I offered my goods to bigger markets and now we supply about 90 supermarkets with our great Brand in the state of Utah.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been somehow of smooth road, however as an entrepreneur we understand the obstacles we face fully, maybe not always prepare for it, but we understand. Some of the struggles had been, access to capital, labor shortages, competing with bigger companies, supermarket space, etc…

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Fierro Group and Rico Brand?
We specialize in providing a line of ready-to-eat Mexican food for supermarkets, coffee shops, delis & restaurants. We do handmade tamales, burritos, salsa, tortillas, rice & beans and more under the Rico Brand name, we do not use any preservatives nor additives, and are always fresh with very high quality and healthy for you and your family!!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Yes, we feel the industry would be forced to provide better, cleaner, healthier, vegan, vegetarian and easy for the consumer. We have to see the new trends and adjust to them!!
